Rishi Sunak has announced a major support package to help self-employed people during the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking at the daily Covid-19 press conference in Downing Street, the Chancellor said the support package for self-employed people would cover 80% of average earnings over the past three years.

He said: “To support those who work for themselves, today I am announcing a new self-employed income support scheme.

“The Government will pay self-employed people who have been adversely affected by the coronavirus a taxable grant worth 80 per cent of their average monthly profits over the last three years."

He has the literal voice of Tony Blair, it's very disconcerting

80% of their average monthly profit. Not much good for those who have recently gone self employed (IE the last two years), not all of us earn "significant profit", not all self employed have work today. not all self employed can survive the pain gap until June and not all self employed will be eligible by the sound of it? The devil will be in the detail.

So many people will suffer/take advantage of any system, no matter the crisis. Hopefully everyone can get some form of income. You want people to stay home. You have closed down businesses, rightfully ofcourse. Now you must help people to help themselves.

Thank you all. As self employed person, I paid every month about £800-1200 a month as a tax, plus dont forget VAT from each worker in place. Any way we will see. If situation will get better plan can change. I want to work rather than getting benefits in some way. But we follow the rules. All the best dear friends. We need to be strong. We will get there for sure...

Maybe those who are self employed will plan ahead in the future. Live within your means. I used to be s tiler and always made sure I had plenty cash saved up in case I couldn’t work for health reasons etc. I had very low outgoings every month. I didnt go and lease an 800 quid a month Audi RS3 or something equally foolhardy.

I am self-employed just myself working from home painting miniatures for a living, thankfully this virus has not affected my business so far but it makes me happy that you are looking out for the self employed people as most of us don't take holidays or get money for having the time off work sick, stay safe

I'm a night support worker for a man with cerebral palsy 25 miles from my home. I've had a pre existing throat condition for over a year that makes me cough aggressively and had we not currently be going through a pandemic my appointment with E.N.T would have stood and potentially required an endoscopy procedure. I am currently working overtime lots to help cover the staffing issues we are facing. My vehicle has had a mechanical failure and off the road last month so I spent £100 on a monthly ticket to get back and forth to work in the home of the person I support. This morning after a 12 night shift, 20 miles from my home and on an empty bus, the driver pulled over and forced me to get off the bus due to my cough, refusing to take me home. That was my day today.

Shop workers are screwed. Reducing the infection rate inverse proportionally increases the time period for which the virus is a danger. Basically, if social distancing etc.. halves the infection rate, it doubles the length of time it's around. What this means for shop workers is they have exactly the same chance of catching it regardless of infection rate and precautionary measures.
