Why Have Soda Cans Exploded on Some Flights?

Blazing temperatures outdoors can wreak havoc inside airplanes. Planes sitting on the tarmac are getting baked as record-high temperatures sweep the U.S. Some soda cans exploded on some Southwest flights due to extreme heat exposure. Southwest Airlines says about 20 employees have been injured from exploding soda cans this summer alone, one victim even needed stitches. Inside Edition's Jim Moret has more.

I’ve had soda cans explode in my car when they’ve been in my car during the summer heat.

“They have to turn engines off”. Then use the APU you greedy penny pinching airlines

I have thought about this. Usually airlines use ground power or APU to provide AC while plane is on the Tarmac.

Things that I was thinking of.

1.) Low cost carriers don’t park near the gate. Thus they don’t use their air bridge. Thus they might not have access to ground power.

2. APU is a small turbine engine located in the tail of the plane. This can provide electricity to the plane to provide lights and AC to cabin. APUs could be switched off to save money on fuel.

3.) Temperatures of Nevada and Arizona can go over 110F. In a plane waiting in tarmac can reach much hotter temperatures which is dangerous for heat stroke.

With all those in consideration. I have concluded that it is likely that the Southwest plane did have the APU running and the AC is on. It’s just that it’s so freaking hot on that tarmac that even with AC the temps inside is still hot.

Normaly when im on a plane is to try to keep the air vents open as they also help with blowing away germs as well

Imagine taking the anxiety of flying for some individuals and adding in extreme heat… What a recipe for disaster!

This happened to me on a roadtrip. Me and my dad were helping one of my teachers move across the country. We packed a six pack of sprite but didn't open them until we stopped at a motel for the night. I opened mine and it sprayed soda all over me. My dad and my teacher were laughing their heads off. The elevation change was the cause.

At least they make good makeshift grenades. I doubt you should try it, though...

This is the exact same thing that happened with me, when I had a layover flight in Phoenix, Arizona to Los Angeles, two years ago, on a Southwest Airlines flight. Even after takeoff, the AC was spewing warm air. It wasn't cold or hot air. prior to takeoff, inside the airplane felt uncomfortable, and many complained that the Airplane was too hot inside.

As a person who lives in Vegas…it’s hell with any temps above 110 …just wait till it’s fall or winter to be here 😂

People fanning themselves in a plane. Welcome to my life every single day during the summer. It's currently 92 degrees inside my apartment. I feel the discomfort of the passengers, I really do. This is why at 5:00 A.M. I start going on my walks.

Stay hydrated, everyone! I'm averaging 130 Oz. of water/day, with the help of an electrolyte package as well.
