Best explanation of the mahjong scene! Thank you for your insight!

I first saw this analysis a couple years ago and it rose my interest in the movie. Last autumn I had a chance to see it for the first time and I loved it. I've now watched it a couple times more and it's become one of my favourites and also revitalised my interest in Asian cultures. I searched for this analysis just to say thank you :)

It’s an amazing, deeply sensitive film, makes me cry each time I see it. Thank you for sharing your wisdom here.

I love how succinct your video essays are! I loved this scene too; it was so accessible to general audiences and impactful as well.

As a Mahjong player the technical aspects of the game were spot on. As a player you have to decide to win or give another player something valuable. As in life choices are hard and you have to make sacrifices.

It’s absolutely my favorite scene. There’s so much packed into it.

My favourite part is that she had the mom realize that even she needed to depend on Rachel's cultural goals (that she looks down on) to keep her son.
I like to think that someone who has everything had to learn something from a person who has no material riches (which is all that's important to the mom).

You might find “Joy Luck Club” an interesting read, as it describes life as very like Mahjong. You have limited time, resources, etc. and when taking on something new, you are giving up something you had. And yes, by not playing a winning hand in favor of Mom, speaks volumes and wins a heart instead. A truly great movie of many parts, isn’t it?

Thank you for your video! It's one of my all time favourite movies and I just rewatched for the 100th time 🥰 It makes me cry happy tears every time!

she would've had a chi combination because of that 8th piece. 8 also means luck so she technically gave away her fortunate fate about the relationship with Nick to Eleanor (who also would get the winning hand because of this piece)

This is one of the best movies ever made.

Very well done and well thought out piece on Asian culture in America! Extremely heartfelt and well-done!
My only hope is to see and hear you speak from YOUR heart, and not from a script, in the future!
Best of luck!

I learned some things. I was turned off in previews because of the Hollywood aspects—everything looks so perfect and it seems to be quite shallow and full of “beautiful people“ and status & wealth aspirations. Although these things may be somewhat true, now I do want to see the film. thanks

I was waiting for the continuation of your mahjong scene explanation but the next half was just nothing about mahjong and you did not finish the game.

Did accented cinema rip off your take on this scene?

Put me right to sleep. Better to just post the script, i"ll read it on my own time.
