It could be said, that a man's family, clan and reputation are his path to immortality. Not to experience life after death, but for others to act out his existence vicariously.
The finality of death will be realized when there is finally no one left to act out your existence in any manner. One could also point out the futility of this as immortality or aspiration there of, when the Planet will eventually disappear. But at that point that disappearance doesn't matter, that lifeless husk doesn't matter because everything that could ever appreciate anything is gone.
The whole scope of human meaning at least to me, is concealed within the biosphere. It is what I cherish and what is meaningful. The universe is uncaring and I am aloof to the universe. The vastness of space is so far away but mankind is so close, that is why what I will do matters. It affects those around me and I have the grandest of responsibilities imposed upon me. It is absolutely glorious and being alive, both in suffering and happiness is preferable to oblivion. At least to me, rant over.

This reminds me of the Zen Koan "The Master and the Strawberry"

A Zen master was performing his daily walking meditation routine, as well as other tasks outside. Suddenly, a hungry tiger began to chase him from out of the bushes. Desperately, the master climbed down onto a sturdy rope on the edge of a cliff to escape the tiger. Then, two mice - one white and one black - began chewing at the strong vine while the tiger was pacing on the cliff above the master. Below, his certain death. In front of him, however, was one ripe strawberry that grew from the cliff face. With one hand, the master gripped the vine and reached for the strawberry. How sweet it tastes to him.
