Why did he not connect the locate transmitter where the tracer was broken? Then t'd into it there and installed a tracer post for future. I locate coax lines for a living and mine are always bang on.

American water was working on a house across the street from my house 2 weeks ago. American water marked out every house with in 200 Ft of the house being worked on. I found out later from a plumber friend of mine this is standard procedure with American water. When it came time to mark out my property American water marked out my 2nd lot where I have no water or sewer line. I have 2 parcels that make up my property. So I can see what you are saying about mark out having no idea what they are doing.

Tracing can be tricky. any metal separated by any insulator causes capacitive coupling. I might be wrong on that. I might be that the didtances of the lines or traces are similar lengths and the signal resonates like antennas. This can cause the radio signal to make, let's call them ghost signals, on Other buried lines. Especially when there are long distances and broken traces or spliced traces that fail due to moisture in the ground. It's really important to try different frequencies in these cases. And even then it's dicey.
It strikes home when you are almost finished with the four foot trench and the actual gas man comes by and says "Nope. that 8" line is on the Other side of your trench...."
It's best to carefully "pothole" and visually identify the actual location.
Usually the guy doing the locating is way underpaid and severely overloaded with work.

I mean coax is copper and tracer line is copper. Probs looks all the same to the metal detector. But if it runs to the main, that's informative. If there no trace around the main it sounds like a bad install.
*Edit: the internet informs me tracer wire is copper clad stainless steel. Shows what I know😆

Since the gas company doesn't locate their own stuff that probably means they have used and old and broken but maybe repairable locating equipment

I had an HVAC guy come clean my package unit and the next day the who thing blow up. Only a few years old and that preventative maintenance cost me thousands that I didn't have... Just saying 😆😂

Grey; We have not heard from you
for some time. All is well?

First time hearing of tracer line.
They asked you did the tracer
have gas in it?
Learn something new.

You laid your own line surely you would have laid it a good two to three feet deep and buried it with filll sand and a sacrificial anode
