The 40-hour workweek was established in 1940.

The economy has changed a little bit since then.

In my view, the financial gains from new technology and increased productivity must go to workers, not just to the people on top.

Asking the people at the top to share the gains won't ever get employees anywhere, they're not afraid to say no and just hoard the profit to themselves. Employees need to start demanding their piece of the pie be delivered, and if they don't get it, then policy must be set to make it so.

People could afford to work less if they were allowed to inside trade like our elected officials.

If it wasn’t for unions, we’d still be working 80hrs a week, kids would still be mining. Normalize worker co-ops and unions. SⒶve🗳️💙and expand our☭ democracy.🛠️🧰🪛

We are so behind the times in everything that really counts. The whole world is laughing. Greedy capitalism is NOT funny.

In 1940, a single worker earned enough to support a family with the wife raising children and teaching them morality. Since the 70's it took two incomes to support a family, both worked and their combined pay was about what one earned in 1940 adjusted for inflation. Older bullies raised the younger kids because school let out at 2 and no parent was home until 6. Today working people can not afford kids even with both working. Replacement humans have to come from welfare mothers or immigrants. Does this look good to you?

The percentage of workers in companies' costs dropped from 50 percent to 20 percent. Workers clearly deserve 32 hours not more but less, even a 20 hour work week would be sufficent.

Go on Bernie

Hilarious that anyone can say that the 32 hour work week would be bad in any way. There’s proof that it works much better than the 40hr week. PROOF! Indisputable and in practice as I’m writing this.

John Kenneth Gailbreath predicted in the 1930's that by now most people would be working not a 32 hour week but a 15 hour week based on the rate of growth of the US economy. America is more than wealthy enough to accomplish this with few exceptions. The problem is the unequal distribution of wealth. Not productivity.

Europe has been doing it successfully for a long time.

A 32 hour work week would be extremely good for our country. It would create more time for families and reduce greenhouse gas emissions too.

Apparently Russia has free Medical care like Europe. And 28 days paid Vacation leave, and paid Maternity leave.
Hmmmm....
Respect to Bernie!

I would love to only work 40 hours a week, I’m a truck driver and work 70-80 hours a week

Similar work weeks are already in place in many EU countries. No wonder they rank higher in prosperity and happiness.

Thank you Senator Sanders for introducing this bill, it's got me very excited!!

I brought up this bill to a boomer a while ago and he said, "Whoever thought that up hasn't worked a day in his life, " but to that I say, whoever is against it hasn't worked a day in the past 30 years. You used to be able to afford a house, two cars, and a family on one salary, they used to give out pensions to employees, and you used to be able to expect to retire some day. Not anymore.

I hope and pray for this bill's success. It would do so much to relieve the stress I'm sure many employees (myself included) are feeling. With a 32-hour work week, more people would be comfortable having children and raising a family. They'd be free to care for their elderly parents, get more exercise, work on personal projects, take care of their mental and physical health, etc. It would reduce the amount of commuting and therefore bring down pollution. It would employ more workers and make workers more valuable. Please let this pass.

Since the Industrial Revolution, people have been talking about working less thanks to increased production. 200 years later, we have men, women, even children working 40 hour workweeks. If you’ll allow me to anthropomorphise the earth, she does not us to produce so much, either. We need to be able to relax and enjoy all the hard work every generation before us has put in. That was always the goal! The goal was never to continue to produce indefinitely and at an increased rate for no reason.

Not to mention reductions in energy consumption!
