To those who don't know, he yells his name because in old Japan it was a customary thing for Samurai. They used to be richly rewarded for their deeds in battle, and these deeds required other soldiers and samurai to testify in their favor. So, to make sure no one was going to think someone else did it, they would straight up yell their name before attempting to do something.

The atmosphere of this battle is awesome. You beat all the guards, grapple hook onto the roof and, below you, see this huge wasteland filled with dead bodies. Then the music stops. And you think "wtf happened here?" So you wait, but nothing happens. So you jump down, and still - nothing happens. So you decide to walk around the completely silent, barren and bloody battle field when, out of nowhere, you hear: "MY NAME IS GYOUBU MASATAKA ONIWA"

I almost had a heart attack.

I remember coming to this battlefield looking around for a minute, then almost shiting my pants when I heard "MY NAME!"

One of the greatest openings to a boss I’ve seen in a while

Epic way of ending a fight "Stabbing to death on a pile burning bodies"

A little historical note; "Gyoubu" is not actually his name, but a court title that roughly means "Minister of Justice" (as a side note, "Shikibu" and "Shume" are also actually court titles, roughly meaning "Minister of Ceremonial Affairs" and "Administrator of the Stables" respectively). Basically, he's yelling that he's Masataka Oniwa, Minister of Justice. As such, his nickname of "Oni-Gyoubu" (鬼形部), which was officially translated as "Gyoubu the Demon", would more literally mean "The Demon Minister of Justice".

In case anyone missed it, the firecracker tool will sort of mini-stun the horse, letting you get in a few hits if you time it right. You get the hint if you listen in to the guy crying over his dead horse in the fortress before you jump over the wall to fight him. Horses don't like gunpowder apparently. Awesome fight, really enjoying the boss designs in this Fromsoftware game.

This is probably the first boss ever to communicate in a logical manner when being somewhat far away initially, making lots of noise and talking to an enemy.

WHICH IS LOUDLY!

Gyoubu is a beast man! That opening! I was like “ hell yeah, this guys hype as hell” then I realized we weren’t on the same team. Voice Actor deserves mad credit!

Man.... in a normal game, this would've been a tedious fight. But in here, the way the gameplay system is designed really made the fight exciting and kinetic with lots of back and forth. This fight almost has a cinematic vibe to it w/o actually having cutscenes. From Soft really knows how to make a good boss fight.

When I finally killed Gyoubu, at first I thought the horse was nudging Wolf as a way of giving thanks for an honorable death. I was very sad.

Then I watched the end of the fight again and realized the horse is actually mourning Gyoubu's death, and I got even sadder.
