After my previous video about trying out UK food I was disappointed we never found any kippers to try for breakfast like in Fawlty Towers. But the good news is our local British store had some so let's try them out .... and hope we don't die.

Aunt Helga always used to make kippers for breakfast on Saint Swithin’s day

Kippers are gutted, salted and smoked herring . The most popular way to cook them is to place them in a pan of water, bring to the boil, discard the water and then place in fresh water and bring to the boil again. They are best served with brown bread and butter and malt vinegar. They come mainly from the UK and the best kippers come from Loch Fyne in Scotland, Scrabster in England and the Isle of Man.

Always remembered it from red dwarf. Ace Rimmer: "Smoke me a kipper! I'll be back for breakfast."

Kippers are an underappreciated uk food . Delicious and nutritious . I grill them so they're really fried in their own oils . Served with brown bread or whatever you fancy . Breakfast of Champions! Glad you tried them . As good as anything anywhere .

I often wondered what kippers were when I listened to Supertramp’s “Breakfast in America”. Tonight I googled it and was a little taken aback that fish would be eaten with eggs for breakfast. Then I started thinking that I love to make salmon fritters during the Lenten season. The main ingredients are eggs amd salmon…so the idea of fish and eggs was no longer that outlandish. Lol.

They are only smoked, no additives, in fact the best way to heat them through, is to stand them head down in a large jug, cover them to the tail with boiling water, and leave for six minutes, pat dry add a knob of butter and little pepper, delicious

I'm glad you liked the kippers.
I think I saw a Celestron Nexstar 130SLT in the background.
Clear Skies.

Most of the Kippers I've seen in my area (Texas) came from Nova Scotia. I've found a little lemon juice and a few capers add to the overall flavor. I think the lemon juice is more important than the capers.

In the Southern US, fish-and-grits is a popular breakfast. Usually fried flounder or cod with a seasoned flour-and-cornmeal batter. So good.
Thanks for the video!

Best way to cook kippers is to poach for just a few minutes and eat with toast sprinkled with lemon juice. Alternatively, grill for about four minutes. I would not destroy it by frying in butter. My weekly breakfast treat in Australia.

Those kippers you have in a bag you can put in a microwave on high for 3 minutes and leave for 1 minute, (don't pierce the bag). Then cut the bag open and tip on a plate just add real butter to melt on top.

I remember as a teenager staying at the Youth Hostel Association hostel at Whitby bay and eating kippers for breakfast everyday. The herrings had been caught, smoked, delivered to the hostel and then cooked for breakfast al on the same morning. I have never tasted better kippers than that and it was cheap, I think the breakfasts were included in the price. After that the family ordered kippers through the post direct from the harbour.

by the way you don't need to cook kippers at all, you can eat them straight out of the packet, they are not raw anymore.

Scottish kippers are the best in the world. When the Scottish do anything, they do it well and kippers are no exception.
In fact many English insist on Scottish kippers. Why? Because the their herrings are caught from the colder northern section of the North Sea, then the herring is cured with salt in the Scottish smoke houses which of course have that wonderful blend of Scottish timbers for the smoke.
Kippers can be grilled or fried, however use a real knob of farm butter when you do either. You can garnish your cooked kippers with fresh parsley or watercress and served with stone-oven hot fresh bread and butter. And not forgetting a nice hot cup of English tea to go with it.

Oh yeah definitely cook them gently. You just have to heat 'em. They'll brown lightly as they heat. Kippers make great snacks on European toast with olive oil, dill, mustard, you name it.
eats, and good for you too!

In Denmark we eat smoked kippers in different sauces like oil with pepper or just water. And eat with rye bread. Also eat it with eggs though. But mostly on rye bread and different stuff on it. But ours is always smoked
