Wow what a humble guy. He even shares his family's recipe, some guys wont even tell you what brand of mustard they use.

I lived 5 minutes from there for 15 years, and El Cochinito is one of the things I miss most about LA. Literally voted best cubano in the world in 2018. Enjoy the good things while you got 'em, folks!

I am in an international traveller and expat. When I went to Cuba in 2003, I classify it as one of my top ten travel experiences of my life. I guess it may have changed a bit but I loved it. One of my post grad lecturers in England loved it so much he went back eleven times. It is so unique. The people, the music, the food, the coffee, the rum, the women and the cigars. A*.

My father was born in Cuba. His family immigrated to the US when he was nine years old. They lived in Miami. My father went to college in Ohio and then settled in Indiana. Sadly I didn't see my grandparents very often. They passed when I was in college. But, the dozen or so times I visited them, it was an amazing experience! My grandmother, Mimi, cooked in a way that I have never experienced anywhere else. My mom was a good cook. But she followed her American born mother and Julia Child. Very classic, but very European. Mimi cooked exotic dishes. The things she created w/pork, seafood, plantains, olives, etc, was amazing! Her coffee was different. Even when she was cooking eggs and toast, she used different oils and spices. I remember, but I cannot replicate. 😥 Sadly most of her recipes are lost. She had no daughters and my father and uncles (including their spouses) never really learned. What I would give to hug and kiss my beautiful Mimi again. Learn her craft and pass it on. ❤

You're welcome from Tampa.
The Cuban Sandwich, as it is known today, came from Tampa's Ybor City neighborhood. The basics of the sandwich were brought over by Cubans who came to Tampa in the 1800's, this was the mixto, which was more or less a grilled cheese sandwich with pork. However, Ybor City was a community with many different people from all over the world and each one of them had a hand in designing the Cuban sandwich that you know today. Cubans got things started with the bread and the pork, then the Spaniards added the ham, the Jewish community added the pickles, swiss, and mustard, and finally the Italians added the Salami.
The sandwich (again, as you know it today) did not exist in Miami until the 70s and did not start popping up in Cuba until travel between the US and Cuba became easier. Ask any native Cuban, and they will tell you it's nearly impossible to find a "Cuban" Sandwich outside of the touristy areas.

This dude is like, "You're sure? I can also make a really good arroz con pollo"

"No! I want the Cuban sandwich!"

"FML"

That “Oh Yes” seemed out of place here.

Married 29 years to a Puerto Rican from Brooklyn and was introduced to this sandwich in 1995 on Canal street. I moved to michigan where there is maybe 3 latino families, so I have to mek them if I want one. I chose to introduce this at our church Potluck last Sunday, and of course my husband doubled up on everything because he told me he isn't going to be left out. I had zero leftovers to take home after making 54 sandwiches. Yes I was exhausted. Now I have been messaged by the pastor's wife asking me to bring them for women's group on Friday . I think that means it was a success.

The key and genius of his sandwich is meat and cheese order...it neutralizes strong flavors..so everything blends perfectly and is amazing.
