In September 1977, NASA launched Voyager I from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The craft carried a golden record that contained a message to aliens from the people of Earth. Here's what it said.

You can now own your own version of the golden record by contributing to a Kickstarter campaign by Ozma Records.

I find it scary that when all humans are extinct, this disc will still be travelling in space, and if someone ever finds it they will be listening sounds from a civilization long gone

To me this is one of the greatest things humanity has ever done. We fearlessly threw our heart and soul into the cosmos, dreaming that it might find someone who could understand. That action in itself says everything about us. Its beautiful.

The most awesome thing is how the scientists broke down such a complicated message to elemental constants, the best parts are probably the hydrogen indicator and the pulsar map, they even impregnated the record with some uranium 238 to allow an alien civilisation to work out when it was launched

Imagine 20 years later the aliens respond with “k”

Stephen Hawkings made a comment that it was a mistake to send this info out into space. He said we have no idea what's out there. It's a similar analogy to an animal in the forest, you dont call out to potential predators that can hurt you.

Why does everyone automatically assume aliens are super intelligent? what if they just sit around and headbut each other to death and if they get the disc they just eat it?

If this is what we send to aliens, imagine what would a highly intelligent alien species send us.

Imagine, years into the far future, we're all dead, but this disc is the last thing that remains of us.

I don't know why but when the sound sample played, I just had this sharp inhale and a need to just... Shed a tear. The fact that this was made is amazing. Astounding. More than what I can express in words.
