Dr. Cheryl Major Brandon Spotlight

Dr. Cheryl Major Brandon is joyfully celebrating her seventy-fifth year on planet Earth. A retired educator, Christian lay leader, and devoted mother of two adult children, Andrew and Dorcas, Dr. Brandon's life is a testament to trailblazing achievements and unwavering faith.

She was the first Black teacher at a predominantly white Christian school, a charter member of the Louisiana 4-H Agents Association, and the first Black LSU Ag Center Energy Conservation Agent in the state of Louisiana and East Baton Rouge Parish, to name a few.

Her service spans a remarkable array of professional and ministry roles, including Praise and Worship Leader, Divorce Recovery Seminar Co-Chair, Congregational Care Lay Minister, Children’s Church Team Leader, Pulpit Leader, Small Group Leader, Head Resident Counselor at Southern University and A&M College, and Instructor at LSU Independent Study-Distance Learning. She has also held pivotal positions such as Extension Home Economist with the LSU Ag Center, Instructional Support Specialist for Exceptional Student Services, and Director of the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School. Her leadership extended to being an Adjunct Graduate School Instructor at Northwestern State University of Louisiana and a Lead Evaluator for the AdvancED SACS Engagement Review Team for over 15 years.

Dr. Brandon’s accomplishments are not only numerous but also impactful. She was the first Black teacher at a predominantly white Christian school and a charter member of the Louisiana 4-H Agents Association. She made history as the first Black LSU Ag Center Energy Conservation Agent in Louisiana and East Baton Rouge Parish.

She attributes her successes to God's glory, having earned a School of Leaders Ministry Diploma from Bethany World Prayer Center, a BS degree in Family & Consumer Science, a Master of Education in Secondary Education, and a Doctor of Education in Special Education from Southern University and A&M College. Her pursuit of excellence continued with graduate studies at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville (School Turnaround Specialists Training), Louisiana Tech in Ruston (Food Science), the University of Texas at Tyler (PLTW Computer Science Engineering), and Southeastern Louisiana University (Secondary School Administration).

Dr. Brandon remains active in her community, volunteering with the Southern University System Foundation and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes/Students (FCA and FCS). Her life is a vibrant tapestry of dedication, faith, and an unwavering commitment to service. Here's to celebrating her extraordinary journey and the many lives she has touched along the way!

Dr. Cheryl Major Brandon holds an impressive array of certifications from the Louisiana State Department of Education, including Child Search Coordinator, Supervisor of Student Teaching, Mild/Moderate (1-12), Occupational Home Economics: Food Service, Parish or City School Supervisor of Instruction, Principal, and Vocational Home Economics. Her extensive qualifications reflect a commitment to educational excellence and leadership.

Her doctoral dissertation, titled “Secondary Teachers' Perceptions of Inclusion and Inclusive Schooling Practices in Louisiana Inner-City Schools,” showcases her dedication to research and improving educational practices. Dr. Brandon is also the author of “Becoming Stronger in the Lord During and After Divorce,” published by Xulon Press, and has developed several Family and Consumer Science Distance Learning Curriculums for LSU High School Independent Study.

A deeply personal connection to education is evident in her pride for Scotlandville Magnet High School, from which her son Andrew Brandon graduated before earning a degree in Marketing from Southern University and A&M College. Her daughter Dorcas graduated from McKinley High School, Northwestern State University of Louisiana, and Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, where she obtained a Master of Education in Educational Administration.

Dr. Brandon's accomplishments and contributions are a testament to her unwavering dedication to education, faith, and family. She continues to inspire and impact countless lives through her professional and personal endeavors.

Currently, she engages with her community through the Facebook group “Winnsboro/Franklin Parish,” a space for family and friends who grew up in Winnsboro or Franklin Parish, Louisiana.
