This video is a step-by-step guide on how to diagnose, test, install, replace, upgrade an alternator and power wire on 2005 to 2010 Ford Mustang GT's. It also covers when it makes sense to upgrade to a high-output alternator.

I had to replace three alternators before realizing that Ford didn't invest in good ground straps and so I put 2 aftermarket straps on, from the alternator to the strut tower and from the alternator directly to the battery. Fixed it thusly.

I put 3 batteries and 3 new Ford alternators in my 06 in its first 5 years! I have seen others online who have done the same! It’s a well known issue with these cars. I read that the fix is to run a ground cable from your negative battery terminal to a bolt on the alternator bracket at the top of the alternator. Doing this ensures that the voltage regulator in the alternator is always seeing the correct battery voltage and will not overcharge it. Without this the voltage field gets messed up and the alternator reads less voltage and ends up overcharging the battery. An automotive engineer in a forum with an early S197 said that this ground cable will prevent this issue. I installed one on my car using a 4 gauge cable. I had bought 55” in length but I did not need nearly that much so I shortened the cable and made it look tidy and zip tied it to the existing wiring harness that runs along the passenger side of the engine. A 24” cable with 3/8” ring terminals on each end will work fine. It’s been a few years since I did that now and no problems, knock on wood!

Had to change out my alternator last summer. I like how you ran the larger cable under the intake manifold, that’s where I planned on running my nitrous wires🤌🏼

Just had my former neighbor and go-to mechanic replace the alternator on our 2006 GT. I was getting the dreaded "check charging system" warning. He had it swapped out in no time. Saved me from probably having to get it towed to a shop (we live in the middle of nowhere), so I gladly tipped him $100. Runs like a top now! Love your videos, man.

The stock alternator doesn’t last too long. Great replacement with the PA Performance alternator I installed one on my 3V and it works great.

Very clever way to insulate and route the alternator wire. Looking forward to more 👌.

Glad you went with a PA performace... Their product and customer service is amazing. I actually had a PA Performance alternator fail after going through 4 Motorcraft Alternators... (I think the Socal heat combined with the terrible airflow at their location smokes them). Anyway, they said to send it back and called me back to tell me they found a peice of foreign plastic in it that had melted onto the windings and caused the insulation to fail BUT that they were warrantying it anyway.

I couldnt believe it. I promptly tell anyone to go with them now and run their 1-wire alternator on my Dodge 12 valve as well.

Hi guys, I had the batt light on even after I’ve had replaced a voltage regulator. However I found out that there are like 4 different regulators and the way to see the difference between them is the color of the cover installed in the back (yellow, gray, blue). So I own a Mustang GT 06 and it use the regulator with a gray cover. If you don’t replace the correct regulator, you could have the right voltage but the batt light will be displayed all the time.
