how do you evaluate the differential at a point like (3, 4)

Dear professor, I can follow the maths but I have to ask what to me is an obvious question...why would we want to approximate when the solution can reached to any accuracy required by other means ? I just don't get it ! Any clarification as to why we would want to 'approximte' would be great. Thanks for great lectures as usual.
