My #1 Tip for Better Art!
Instead of a sketchbook Sunday Timelapse this week I have an artist pep talk about pushing your skills as an artist. There is a point in every painting where you can decide to quit while your ahead or push for something greater even if that means you risk ruining it. Today I'll tell you why you should push past the fear and try!

have a rooster that hangs in my kitchen and mocks me. I liked it and hung it. I sat to eat and when I saw it, I thought...hmm....I need to make the feathers stand out more. Next day it was back in the craft room. I painted and got it where I wanted it. After it dried, I hung it again. At dinner, it mocked me again. The shadows were all wrong. Back to the craft room. This painting is about 2 years old. I don't do it daily, but periodically now, It goes back to the craft room. It is an ongoing experiment....an acrylic obviously. But it has become a joke. You see....I started out trying to use multi colors instead of realistic ones. Now when someone comes to visit, they head to the rooster to see if it has changed again. Oscar the rooster....poor thing has an identity crisis.

Awesome advice, and so relatable. I'm currently doing a daily drawing challenge, and posting my creations to my channel. With almost every daily drawing I am trying out new media and new styes, and I always seem to end up at a stage when it looks OK, but I'm learning it usually turns out better if I push past the fear and keep going further. You are so right that I almost always end up at a point later of being content and it really feeling finished.

Thank you Lindsay, not just for this advice, but for really showing what it looks like to push past fear of "messing it up". I am very new to creating art, just experimenting with everything and it has been so great to be able to see an experienced and talented artist put their process out there. It's really inspiring to watch someone move through their own fear to create something new and beautiful.
Thank you to all the artists that commented on this thread, I feel like I learned a lot from reading about your experiences.

Your words ring so true, Lindsay! I used to watch the Christopher Lowell show back in the 90's, he was an interior designer and did some crafting also, but he always used to say "where there is fear there is no creativity". These words have always stuck with me and every time I get to the point where I'm a little afraid I'll ruin my project if I go on I think of this phrase and just go for it!

I always tell my students what makes an artist is bravery, not talent or materials or schooling. This lesson is so on point- Thanks so much for voicing this for your viewers.

Thank you. I needed this. Fear has ruined my last three paintings. Then I get sad. So, I think I'll go downstairs and gesso over the wolf moon I tried to paint last night. You really are fantastic and a blessing.

My tactic is to put the work away and let it "age". Sometimes it wont come back out for years, but when it does my older and wiser art spirit usually knows exactly how to finish it. The "aging" process gives me distance from the work and eliminates any fear that stopped me from moving forward with it.

Really great advice Lindsay. I’ve always found that going head on into the fear is the only way to break free of it. 💞💫

You are an amazing speaker and so inspirational! I have to tell you, I gesso over many pieces, I only started with acrylics about 3 years ago and I tell you, I mess up a lot! Sometimes I get frustrated and just want to quit but then I think, one more time and voila, its a keeper! So, thanks for sharing and encouraging!
