as a South African I dont eat any of this stuff for school lunch but what we do eat is like a main like a rap or mini pizza with a few snacks, a yoghurt, a cappuccino muffin and some fruit but we also have tuckshops that sell stuff like burgers wraps, toasted sandwiches, sweets, slapchips, crisps, popcorn, drinks ECT.

South African school meals have healthy ingredients such as corn, squash, sweet potatoes, and yams. There's also rice, soft porridge, and meat that is sprinkled in with the vegetables.

I went to school in South Africa for 9 years in the 2000s and we never had anything as decent as this. We just had really basic stuff that can be easily made in huge batches. Bland spaghetti Bolegnese, jam sandwiches, the occasional burger with a thickness of approximately 0, 5mm or boiled potatoes and ketchup.

I won't complain, because the food itself was very cheap, but I was always envious of my older brother, who went to a different school that allowed kids to order pies (basically just pasties) in the morning and have them delivered to the classroom at breaktime. Not as cheap, but he talks fondly of them to this day.

BTW, your pronunciation of boerewors was not bad at all.

Edit: ooh I forgot to mention we occasionally had curry and rice! It wasn't a patch on anything you'd make at home, but it was so much better than everything else.

I'm also south African and my granny used to work at a public/government school. Usually kids that go to these schools are quite underprivileged so food is provided to them by their schools, they range from schools and have different meals everyday.

Our typical school lunch is. Pap(maize meal) and milk, pap and pilchard with cabbage. Samp and beans. Rice and pilchards. Yeah

I also believe that one of the reasons why we don't have caffeterias is cause we have open school architrcture. As in we don't have our entire school in one building with a courtyard or something like that in the middle.

It's usually a series of buildings each with their own classes or function like the admin office or the tuck shop

Loved being featured however you are correct on most schools not serving lunch, we used to pack it from home, at school tuck shops sold chips, pies, kota, samosas, toasted sandwiches and if it’s a school that provides lunch (for the needy) it’s usually samp, soya mince with rice or pap and cabbage and butternut for salads, sometimes they’d get tin fish and rarely so maybe twice a year, beef stew with rice, pap or phuthu

As a South African, my school would have to bring their own food or they could order from the tuckshop, on Fridays they always had pizza, during the rest of the week you could get a peppermint tart, ice creams, chips or drinks. Then only after school are you allowed to buy sweets. ORRR if you want an actual meal instead of dessert then you will have to Pre order smth.

Mate I'm afraid that, since that is very much not boerewors, the only accurate part of this is the mielies (the corn). 😂

From my experience in school that is way better than we were served.

Growing up in South Africa the most popular lunch purchased at my school tuck shop was literally a quarter loaf of bread that is hollowed out, stuffed with chips, doused with whatever condiments you can find, and then eaten leaving you feeling warm, fuzzy and ready to pass out before 4th period
