The sound of tools and engines can be heard in the background as we enter an auto workshop.

Welcome, fellow BMW enthusiasts! Today, we'll be diving into the common issues that you may encounter with the BMW N42/N46 engine. Understanding these problems will help you identify warning signs and take necessary action to keep your engine running smoothly.

TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER FAILURE

The timing chain tensioner is a critical component in the N42/N46 engine. Over time, it can wear out, causing chain slack and potentially leading to catastrophic engine damage. If you hear rattling noises coming from the engine or notice a loss of power, it's crucial to have your timing chain tensioner inspected and replaced if necessary.

DISA VALVE ISSUES

The DISA valve is responsible for controlling the variable length of the intake manifold. Unfortunately, it's a known weak point in the N42/N46 engine. The valve can break or become clogged, resulting in rough idling, poor acceleration, and even engine misfires. Regular inspections can help identify any DISA valve issues and prevent further damage.

VALVETRONIC MOTOR MALFUNCTION

The Valvetronic system, a notable feature of the N42/N46 engine, can also experience problems. The Valvetronic motor, which controls the intake valve lift, can malfunction, leading to reduced engine performance, rough idling, and increased fuel consumption. If you notice a loss of power or experience irregular engine behavior, it's wise to have the Valvetronic system inspected by a professional.

OIL LEAKS

Oil leaks can occur in several areas of the N42/N46 engine, including the valve cover gasket, oil filter housing, and oil pan. These leaks can lead to oil consumption, engine overheating, and potential damage if not addressed promptly. Regularly check for oil leaks and have them repaired by a qualified mechanic to maintain engine health.

VANOS SOLENOID FAILURE

The Vanos solenoid controls the variable valve timing, ensuring optimal engine performance. However, it is prone to failure in the N42/N46 engine. Symptoms of a faulty Vanos solenoid include rough idling, decreased power, and even engine stalling. If you experience any of these issues, it's important to have the Vanos solenoid inspected and replaced if necessary.

CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR FAILURE

The camshaft position sensor monitors the position of the camshaft, ensuring precise fuel injection and ignition timing. Over time, the sensor can fail, resulting in poor engine performance, difficulty starting the engine, and even misfires. Regular inspection and replacement of the camshaft position sensor are crucial for maintaining engine efficiency.

COOLING SYSTEM ISSUES

The N42/N46 engine's cooling system plays a vital role in preventing overheating. However, components such as the water pump, thermostat, and radiator can experience issues. If you notice engine overheating, coolant leaks, or inconsistent temperature readings, it's essential to have the cooling system inspected and repaired to prevent potential engine damage.

VACUUM LEAKS

Vacuum leaks can occur in the N42/N46 engine, leading to rough idling, decreased power, and even stalling. These leaks can be caused by deteriorated hoses or loose connections. Regularly inspecting the vacuum system and addressing any leaks promptly will help maintain engine performance.

PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) VALVE FAILURE

The PCV valve regulates the ventilation of gases from the engine's crankcase. A failing PCV valve can cause excessive oil consumption, rough idling, and decreased fuel efficiency. Regularly inspect and replace the PCV valve as part of your maintenance routine to ensure proper engine ventilation.

Remember, preventive maintenance is key to prolonging the lifespan of your BMW N42/N46 engine. Regular inspections, following the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, and addressing any issues promptly will ensure a smoother and more reliable driving experience.

BMW N42/N46 4 cylinder engines have no DISA . The DISA issue is present only in 6 cylinder engines ? ?

There's not one video on the entire internet about bleeding the cooling system on these engines

The most expensive issue on these is valve stem seals. and its bound to happen.

Disa valve is not present in n42 and n46 engines...

I own n46 and I have experienced 90% of these issues mentioned, including brakes vacuum pump, valve stem seals... poor engine indeed....

Had the VVT problem, hard to figure out, also watchout for it's sensor and the gasket of the sensor. It's kind od poorly made, wasn't able to tighten mine and it leaked oil and threw out a code (system too lean on bank 1)

greetings, I own an e46 with N46 1.8 and 116 hp, I have never had a single problem, it has 305, 000 km, it works perfectly, there is no smoke from the exhaust, the consumption is 7.3 liters. but I'm planning an e90 also with N46 2.0 and 129 hp, or maybe a diesel M47 with 122 hp.. please, stay with the e46 or which one should I choose between the two engines in the e90 that I mentioned? thank you

Short answer. dont buy anything with this engine, unless you dont have problems with putting money in it againand again and its not your primary drive.

Clogged Pcv plus faulty oil level sensor can lose you an engine so look out for that.
