Healthy food is hard to come by in many sections of Bridgeport, CT. Especially on a food stamp budget. We follow a single mother shopping as she tries to make her SNAP benefits stretch.

Why do people only blame the mom in this situation? The dad is just as irresponsible as her for "popping out kids." I think she is doing the best she can with what she has

In India, being round and overweight is often seen as a sign of wealth and prosperity. Being thin is generally associated with poverty. Quite the opposite in the US.

She’s doing a great job. She tries to buy as healthy as possible, even commuting to go to a real grocery store. At least she cares about her kids.

My grandma gets $72 a month. It’s so heartbreaking. It’s like she worked her whole life to struggle like she did when she was working? This is frustrating to see.

I can tell Mercedes doesn't really have anybody to talk about this with :(

Think about the elderly Americans who have to decide if they will pay for medications or food with no ability to get a job.

What a great mom, I can tell by the way she speaks. She is really trying to make the best out of her and her kids lives

I went to school, got a master's degree, and then worked 20 years in my field before 2autoimmune diseases left me unable to work anymore. I'm single and have no kids. I've been fighting for SS disability, but it takes forever because you're repeatedly denied. I would give anything to have my life back where I was working and a contributing member of society. I made plans to care or myself and not have children out of wedlock, but I didn't see health problems out of my control robbing me of it all.

it's gonna be a long ass minute before I have kids. I'm barely making it alone. God bless, Sister.

Community gardening I think would be ideal in these communities or at least the development of vertical farming considering most of the buildings in that city are abandoned. That is a must. It would be a good source of employment as well

That's why I don't have kids. I can barely take care of myself lol. I'll pray for her though she seems really strong.

Edit: I had my first child May 2018. I’m not on any government assistance. Lol still nothing wrong with it though.

This is awful. I know this was 5 years ago but I hope her life is better now.

My mom was married. With 4 kids when my dads drug habit developed and she became a single mom because she left. She worked everywhere you could think of. Roofing. She was a prison guard. Daycare worker. Restaurant. Then she got fibromyalgia and was confined to the bed for a year. The meds they gave her made it damn near impossible for her to care for all of us. Eventually my mom just worked through the pain. I hate seeing it. It’s not so black and white. Be mindful.

I love how all the fathers walk away like “ it’s not my problem”. Yes it is feed your kids you made them too . She’s there every day taking care of the kids . Why give her grief ? Poor woman is only trying her best with what she has . And daycare costs a fortune so lots of single moms are stuck in a no win situation !!. I hope she has brighter days ahead x

As a kid I had this misconception, DEVELOPED COUNTRIES - everybody has job, free education, healthy food and no poverty.
