What's even crazier is that Hiroo wasn't even the last WW2 Japanese soldier to surrender. A soldier by the name of Teruo Nakamura surrendered later that year.

11:30 Major reads the surrender order issued by general Yamashita after 29 years following his death in 1946 that's crazy

When I was a boy in the 70s I remember my dad, a marine who served in the Korea war, being absolutely fascinated by this story.

Sad as this tale is the saddest part for me is when he surrenders his sword to the Philippine military authorities and they respectfully hand it back.

I first heard about this guy in a History Channel documentary. These guys literally make documentaries on any interesting stories about WW2 they can get their hands on.

The culture shock going off to fight in the 1940’s and coming back in the mid 70’s would be insane.

My Dad was stationed at SUBIC Naval Base and a group of his officer mates chartered a nice cabin cruiser for a fishing weekend. We dropped anchor around the island, I was 8 and I remember the water was so flat with no waves at all. This was in 1971, didn’t know Lt. Onoda was on the island still in hiding.

In about 1988 I was in a small village outside of Vientiane in Laos.
I met a japanese man who had gone awol from the retreating Japanese army .He had married a woman from the village and just stayed on.
We had little comon language but managed alittle conversation.Ive never forgotten that encounter.

That town's locals who had relatives killed by Onoda, still hated him to this day.

Filipino here. Hiroo Onoda, was considered a nuisance by the residents of Lubang, he killed a water buffalo of a farmer, who was interviewed on local TV. After multiple attempts of Philippine Constabulary to reach him, they eventually stopped because he would fire at them.

Wow ! They seriously nailed the actor for Onoda. He looks so much alike to the real person !

I remember hearing about this many years ago. No matter which side you were on, you have to respect a man who stayed true to his code and his sense of honor for so very long.
The Japanese were once my country's enemies and have since become close friends and allies. I salute this soldier.

Finest example of honor and duty in all of human history on our planet and I was lucky enough to see it when it was discovered.
