The reason the 5 speed was such a sore point on the old DR-Z is Suzuki lifted everything from their off road "E" and kicker models. The good from this was the "S" shared the same frame, suspension and basic engine architecture as the off road bikes, and it could be set up to work good with all the now well known mods, swapping cams for the "E" units, FCR carb, full exhaust, etc. The problem is the transmission was a close ratio off road unit. Great in the "E" but ungreat in the dual sport S.

Suzuki did a lot of nice things with this bike, it will be interesting to see if revamping the transmission ratios is on the list.

Suzuki singlehandedly keeping the 400cc class of bikes alive. Honda needs to bring back a modernized XR400R!!!!

Deciding factors for me will be gear ratios, price, and if traction control and abs settings stay to their settings when the bike stalls or is turned off and on again.

No extra power, still 5 gears, extra weight, and all kinds of new stuff to go wrong- wrapped up most likely with a higher msrp?
HUGE miss.

Good review!
I definitely like the new version.
I also like Suzuki,
I've owned 2 DR650's they were both bombproof.
Just two questions:

1. Why can't Suzuki put in a 6th gear when the other brands can?

2. $9000.00???

Deal breaker for me 😢

Hmm I’d say could the Suzuki 250 storm have more front suspension and maybe the rear to. It seems to be good at the moment plus put on hand grip heater like the Suzuki Strom 6:50.

Just please give the DR650 these same updates next year (2026). I'll pay the $9000.

As a life long Suzuki fan (who wound up being a Suzuki dealer - what are the chances?) I want o see Suzuki at or near the top of the Japanese motorcycle pecking order. I get the impression that the auto side of Suzuki gets the lion's share of the available funds..or maybe the marine division.. but the powersports side is languishing in mediocrity. When I was a teenager Suzuki had won EVERY 125 mx world championship... Like many others I worshipped DeCoster and wanted to race a yellow bike.. Now their MX bikes remain untouched, non updated, and non competitive on the race tracks. What happened? A few years ago when the side by side market exploded (I hate them too - but selling them keeps the lights on) I attended the sealer meeting in Vegas where the head of American Suzuki told us - first thing ' "Do not ask if we are going to produce a side by side because we are NOT". Love em or hate em, they are what is selling right now and it has to be hurting Suzuki not to have a product to compete

For the love of motorcycles, I wish people would wait and ride the damn thing before making absolute judgements based on paper stats. I get it, I wanted a 6th gear too! Once people get a chance to ride it we may be shocked. Just have to wait and see.

Long story short, if it's a bullseye or a miss will come down to the price, "needs" to sell under 6k....7k for the ancient drz400 is just ridiculous 🤦‍♂️😂

How did you guys like the $9, 000 MSRP?

Idk, I wanted a good Japanese dual sport. But this one priced around 10k and Husqvarna 701 or KTM for slightly more money will walk laps around drz.

Same as the gen 3 Busa update. New electronics, more weight, less power & a 50% price increase.

Minimal upgrades for euro 5, so Suzuki just wants to keep marketshare. Weight had to go up, but hopefully, the price doesn't.

I own two DRZ's a 2000 and a 2021, none of the stuff I wanted on this bike has been addressed, just an extra pump and complexity, disappointing

No sixth gear - not much point in the new models.
