How to Write 12 Big Band Charts Per Year

My good friend Frank Mantooth
used to write about 12 big band
charts, on average per year,
before his untimely
death in 2004.

I once asked him once how he
did that with all the other
stuff he had going on with clinics,
gigs, traveling, etc.

During a break in one of our
weekly racquetball matches, he told me.

"I just write 8 measures a day", he said.

8 measures a day??

Didn't seem possible to me to complete
12 full length big band charts every year
by doing so little every day.

So when I got home I grabbed a calculator.

I figured there are 246 days during the year,
not including weekends and a 2 week vacation.

52 X 5 - 14 = 246

246 X 8 measures = 1968

Let's say the average chart is 160 measures
long. (some will be longer, but ballads would
come to much less)

1968 divided by 160 = 12.3

12 big band charts per year by
writing just 8 measures a day!

I've never forgotten this simple
concept and I try to employ it as
much as I can in other areas
of my life.

So next time you sit down to
work on a chart, just
try to complete only 8 measures, then
go do something else.

Do this consistently and you'll
find your productivity will
go through the roof.
