Land Surface Temperature (LST) is a critical parameter for understanding the thermal state of the Earth's surface. Using data from Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 satellites, LST can be accurately estimated over various geographical areas. The thermal infrared sensor (TIRS) on these satellites captures thermal radiation emitted from the Earth's surface, which can then be processed to derive LST.
In Google Earth Engine (GEE), LST calculation involves using the thermal bands (Band 10 in Landsat 8 and Landsat 9) to first convert digital numbers to brightness temperature in Kelvin. This is further refined using vegetation indices like the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to account for emissivity variations. The resulting LST data helps monitor environmental changes, urban heat islands, and land surface processes with high spatial resolution and temporal consistency.
