as an anime watcher, what i remember about gyro is that at the end a group of ants were looking for him. never got the impression that he was meruem. I did think maybe he did not survive, but it never crossed to me that he turned into an ant

Considering how Togashi writes, I would not be surprised if when the current arc is over and we cut back to Gon and he casually mentions meeting some guy named Gyro. Saying he had some scary ideas but now they're best friends

While I understand why people think the bad ending is everyone dying. Why do people not consider that Gon doesn't end up getting influenced by Gyro instead. Gon isn't exactly a hero persay, he just does what he wants. I mean that has been reference through the series and the Chimera arc definitely showed that he can easily fall into a more villian role

I find it funny how so many times you make a point or ask a question in the first half that I’m prepared to “umm actually” and you end up covering what I was going to say in the second half.

I think this channel should do live readings of the anime whilst we wait for new content. That would be amazing for everyone who hasnt read but just wanted anime. I love to hear someone read it while i work or just listening.

What saddens me about that ending is Gon is seemingly more selfish than ever. How did he get to that point when he’s developed a lot already

If Gon ever returns to the series I always envisioned him having to regain his Nen through some sort of intense introspective “trial” of some sorts where he has to look inward and overcome internal struggles to restore his aura/Nen or at least re awaken it to begin learning once more

There's something insane about Gyro that makes me excited to see what Togashi does with his character.

The crazy thing about Gyro is the fact that of all chimera ants that were born, only he immediately and completely retained his sense of self and ignored, resisted, crushed - however you want to say it - the queen's control over all chimera ants she birthed.

All others were born and immediately, as is their nature as new chimera ants, devoted themselves to her cause, though some eventually regained their human memories and developed independance. Gyro is the only one who was basically killed, eaten, and reborn as an ant with almost no hiccup in his ongoing sense of self and 'life'. He is the only one whose sense of self and willpower dominated the chimera ant nature to obey the queen, immediately after birth.

That's a testament to his willpower and single-minded focus on his goals, the strength of the emotions and thoughts that drive him and the depth of the 'darkness' inside him from his childhood and who knows what else happened in his rise to power over the NGL.

And as we know, Nen responds and is influenced very strongly by emotions and desires. As someone who has already died once, whatever Nen he develops, in addition to whatever innate skills and strengths he has as a chimera ant, he's going to be an amazing villain to watch.

The one thing I always noticed with Gon is that he never really used his nen abilities in any impressive ways, the Nen abilities themselves are more impressive than the way they were used. He brute forced his way to victory too often, unlike Killua for example. They are obviously different in how they do things and had a different training backgrounds but even then I'd say Gon's genius side was too flat.
And then I remembered that they skipped years of training when they got the 0 to 100 nen awakening, instead of slowly discovering what nen feels like and how to use it. If Gon were to re-learn Nen but doing it from scratch instead of getting a shortcut I think he would have a deeper grasp and understanding of Nen and that would level him up a lot.
Finesse and wittiness goes a long way in Nen battles. We saw a perfect example of that with a top tier specialist like Chrollo needing an insane amount of prep time and a lot of different cards to defeat a genius like Hisoka with a Nen ability that is not even as close as impressive. And even then, Hisoka's resourcefulness ended up making him not only survive, he came out way stronger than before, that kind of thing is what Gon could use imo.

Or he could just chill with his Aunt, that works too.
