POST TEXT:
"So I can get typical shonen stuff about his character : desire for strength, fair fight , determination blah blah blah.
But the trouble I have in understanding really comes from his hypocrisy and weird moral compass. I have seen other explanations of this be something to the tune of "he's a kid, he's selfish and learning how the world works in the most extreme way possible". But while I understand the merit of that argument , it also does not make too much sense to me when I see the other kids in the series, namely, Killua. Killua does not act as selfishly as Gon , and throughout the series we see that he is less impulsive, more empathetic and honestly more well adjusted than Gon is despite the fact that thier childhoods are night and day. Killua was raised in a harsh environment since he was born and really wasn't given a break until he was like 15. Gon on the other hand was just chilling on a peaceful fishing island surrounded by nature in a loving home before the events in the show. Other MCs in shonen around Gon's age , who have the same mentality of"i wanna be the best" are usually more honest, selfless and let's be real here ; they don't turn into psychopaths when angry. (refrencing the thing with Komogi and pitou). I guess this is all my long winded way of asking ; what gives ? Gon didnt have a traumatic past like any of his peers and he has no reason to have a chip on his shoulder or anything to warrant having as much pride or the feelings on inferiority as he seems to show."

I LOVE THIS SHOW! .
BUT and this is a big BUTT , I don’t love the main character :
Look, don’t get me wrong, Gon is a decent protagonist and all but I think that like many other fans on their first watch I was a LITTLE taken back at how this guy did a complete 180 , going from the same wide-eyed kid in the Hunter exam arc to this RUTHLESS MONSTER in Chimera Ant Arc. I wanted answers , what was Gon’s problem? Why did he freak out, and almost die for some dude he knew for like 3 weeks ! What GIVES?:

#HunterxHunter #GonFreecss #Gon #HxH CharacterAnalysis
#VideoEssay

-Why is Gon so selfish ?
-The argument that he’s a kid makes no sense because other kids in the show mainly KILLUA at his worst doesn’t turn into a monster when angry.
-Where does Gon get that chip on his shoulder ? he had no traumatic past , nothing to give him this inflated sense of pride. He’s not vegeta, bakugo or Escanor. So where did it come from and why is he willing to die for it ?
-MOST IMPORTANTLY : WHy was he willing to kill and DIE for some random dude he met ONCE as a kid and then traveled with for like two weeks????

Killua literally murdered 2 people for bumping in to him and grabbing his shoulder. It wasn't until he became friends with Gon that he stopped killing everyone he disagreed with.

The fact that gon grew up in a "normal", peaceful life where the most exciting thing to happen is catching a big fish. He was sheltered, until he experienced loss for the first time when kite died.

Gon's characterization is very realistic. Children often lack the emotional experience to deal with negative emotions. Gon let his anger and rage consume him. Gon's transformation symbolizes both immense power and a loss of innocence.

Honestly, I think gon is a pretty good protagonist. He isn’t perfect which that’s what makes him more interesting. It’s nice that he isn’t boring and is completely always doing the right thing. It makes him more unique compared to other shounen main characters.

I don't think that Kite's death is the main reason why he freaked out, i think that's because he thinks that what happened was his fault, because he wasn't strong enough, and that led to the death of a Ging's friend. His "weakness" was something that aways bothered him, the first time he got upset in the show was when Hisoka pittyed him, and healing Kite wasn't even his main concern wen he confronted Pitou, Killua had to remind him that they needed her alive. In other words, i don't think that he got upset with Pitou for killing Kite, i think that he got upset with himself for not being able to help, so his pride is a way bigger motive to what happened than his relashionship with Kite. That and his suicidal tendencies.

Killua: "I ripped a man's heart out with my bare hands"
Gon: "That's so pog!"

I absolutely love Gon as a protagonist. At first sight he appears to be your typical shonen protagonist but the reality is, he is much more flawed which makes him so interesting for me.

Gon is one of my favorite characters because he's the most accurate presentation I've seen of a kid in an anime. Gon is a normal kid and hasn't experienced any major trauma unlike Killua who's lived his entire life surrounded by death, and as you know kids don't exactly have the most developed sense of reasoning or empathy to begin with which I think perfectly explains why Gon does things that may seem rash, selfish, or illogical. Placing shonen protagonist levels of uppity morality onto Gon doesn't work because he's not Lemillion or anime Goku.

Edit: this has to be my favorite editing out of all your videos.

Edit2: watch Yu Yu Hakusho.

If you read the manga you'd know that he didn't just know kite for 15 minutes. Kite was essentially the closest thing Gon ever had to a father like figure, even though he was gone, when he saved Gon in the woods as a child he didn't just walk off afterwards. They spent hours talking to each other afterward, Kite telling Gon about hunters, Ging, and thats when he left Gings license with him. Kite is the whole reason the story ever began in the first place.

also, in the scene where Killua pulled out a mans heart, Gon praised him and was excited how powerful Killua was, while Leorio is scared and in shock

"Why is gon so selfish?"
I wouldn't call it selfishness. As a child he wasn't taught yet to feel for others besides himself and Those he cares about. This is why during the Training Exam he really didn't care about other people dying all around him. They weren't important to him so they were worth about as much as gum on the sidewalk to Gon

"Being a kid is no excuse"
It rlly kinda is Cuz as a Kid, stuff like death doesn't really register to you unless it's someone your close to. It makes sense for killua not to snap cuz he was raised by assassins. Somewhere he was taught to how to keep his cool. Gon has never suffered actual pain and loss and he was Under the belief everything is always supposed to turn out fine. That's just kid Ignorance.

"Where does his pride come from"
That pride comes from being a child as well. When your a kid it's all sunshine and butterflies. Gon is willing to do whatever it takes to secure that happiness he promised himself. That includes killing.

I think Gon's personality is pretty consistent.
- he always care to people he know
- he always help people (exclude badge hunting)
- stubborn and always do hes own way
- he can't lie and hate lies
- he always snap easily

Gon is just apathetic about poeple. He's not a hero, he never claimed he wanted to be a hero. He has a goal and he does everything he can to progress towards it. He helps those he cares about. If you actually think about it Gon's selfishness is pretty common behavior in real life.

I'll start with your most important question

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Why was he willing to kill and DIE for some random dude he met ONCE as a kid and then traveled with for two weeks?

My answer: Gon, as you know, didn't have his father by his side in his whole life. He only got to know that his dad was even alive because of Kite. But I'll go back a little, before Kite even figured out that Gon was Ging's son, Kite saved Gon's life and taught him a lesson about those bears blah blah blah. This was Gon's first lesson from an older and independent man. This is mere speculation but I think Gon found him cool, and Kite somewhat became a fatherly figure to him which led him to have mad respect for Kite. Thus, if it weren't for Kite, Gon would have never became a Hunter.

-Why is Gon so selfish?

My answer: Because he is a child. Hear me out, I know you said this reason does not make sense but I'll explain it. Gon doesn't care about right or wrong. He only cares if it interests him or if it benefits him, just like a child. To back this up, Zepile (pot guy) even stated this in the anime. Zepile mentioned his wrongdoings but Gon did not care, he only cared about those sidestepping stuff because it sounded cool. Therefore, he found Zepile interesting. Another example is when the scissor guy from Greed Island, helped Gon and Killua train. It mentioned how much of a bad guy that scissor guy was, but once again, Gon did not care. After they were done training with him, Gon treated him as a friend just because that scissor guy helped him get stronger. Therefore, scissor guy was beneficial in his own eyes.

-Where did Gon get that chip on his shoulder?

My answer: He wasn't that prideful tbh. Just like that guy in this video, I agree that Gon just wanted to do things in those ways to prove he can hunt Ging, a two star Hunter, in a way he thought Ging would have approved.

Btw, I believe that the reason why Killua wouldn't turn into a monster if he were to get extremely mad is because he was already exposed to how cruel this world was from being an assassin.

(forgot to mention this but for the most important question, I believe another reason was that Gon never experienced true lost before. With his childish and sociopathic personality, I think it was reasonable for him to have gotten that mad)

Lil note: I really think they should have added Kite in the first episode because it leads people thinking that Gon overreacted. Another reason is that, in the beginning of the anime, we had no clue to what a Hunter does. If Kite was in the beginning and it showed, him and Gon talking about Hunters, it would have given an example to the audience of what a Hunter is through Kite and his convo with Gon.

You missed an important part about Gon, it is fundamental to understanding him. He rarely EVER gets upset for himself (you can see this in his fight with hanzo), its always released for his friends (you can see this for killua, karapica, zushi, kite ect. all through the whole show) this amplifies his rage many times over. AND he's very hard on himself inwardly for perfection (seen in stubbornness with hanzo, hisoka, razor, ect.), imperfection and especially helplessness in himself crates a massive amount of stress (he bottles this stress from his helplessness throughout multiple times in the show). Both of these are integral to understanding why he would go full tilt over kite. The bottled up and amplified rage he only feels for others (that lingered and got teased in kite's case) was squared by the stress he felt of not being good enough to save or help kite (that also lingered in him for some time, you can see this when he is asked to attack morel with full power). (plus the thought of it all ending there anyways) This lead him to *"use everything"* in the end as he says himself.

honestly its enough stress to make me dizzy just thinking about it.
