Scientists have made attempts to bring back extinct species through cloning and genetic engineering techniques. While none have been successful in fully resurrecting a species in its original form, there have been some notable attempts.

In 2003, a wild goat called the Pyrenean Ibex was successfully cloned but died shortly after birth. This makes it the first and only known species to have gone extinct twice.

In 2021, researchers were able to use a technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer to bring back the gastric-brooding frog, although the embryos did not survive to become live frogs.

The Pyrenean wild goat is not a species but a subspecies of the Spanish Ibex, the Capra pyrenaica pyrenaica. They recently introduced an extant subspecies of the Spanish Ibex in the pyrenees, the Capra pyrenaica victoriae
