Karela, also known as bitter melon or bitter gourd has amazing healing properties. Most people dislike it due to its extreme bitter taste, but a bitter taste is very good for the liver to both cool it down and help it get rid of toxins.

It also helps the liver to lower triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. And it has a compound in it which is similar to insulin which helps to lower the blood sugar by directing the glucose into the liver, muscles and fat. And it helps you lose weight by increasing your metabolism. It also helps weight loss by stopping the formation and growth of fat cells and also by preventing the fat cells from storing fat.

Many people state that it gives them healthy glowing skin due to its tendency to keep the liver and blood clean. And anything that is good for the liver will also benefit the eyes, since they are both considered pitta organs and tend to accumulate heat, which can affect their normal functions. Plus bitter gourd contains both Vitamin A and Beta Carotene to help nourish the eyes.

And bitter melon has had lots of research on it demonstrating its efficacy in treating cancer. Since sugar feeds cancer, eating bitter melon 2-3x a week should be a top priority of all cancer patients due to bitter melon’s strong capability of lowering the sugar in the blood, thus starving the cancer to death.

So if you can develop a taste for this very bitter food your liver will thank you and since the liver has over 500 functions in the body, your overall health will improve in many ways.

I love bitter melon. It's good for your health. Pack with nutrients and has a lot of health benefits like it can help reduce blood sugar, could decrease cholesterol levels, may have cancer fighting properties, and improve fiber intake.

I'm from Philippines. We love bitter melon and we call it "Ampalaya" It is proven to help lower blood sugar level because our bloodline is prawn diabetic and most of us can't afford maintenance medicine. My relatives especially who rely only on organic foods as cure. This vegetable is magical. Don't mind about the taste. Make a great dish out of it and you are good to go.

My mom use to sprinkle salt on diced bitter melon and juice it before she cooked it with cabbage and salted codfish. Sometimes it was cureied in coconut milk.
We ate it with rice as a meal periodically, once in a while.
The juice was bitter salty and we drank it as it was to clean our system.

Its been extensively studied in england. The south east asian community is predisposed to insulin dependent diabetes: but doctors found that their carela based diets meant they had zero amputations and minimalist serious consequences like diabetic neuropathy. For those unable to tolerate the taste it is available in pill form

Olive oil can be added after cooking the better melon, because if you heat the oil becomes as bad as any other vegetable oil. so, no heating no cooling the olive oil before eating .

The most wonderful recipe for Bitter Melon is Divya Alter's recipe from her first book "What to Eat for How you Feel" Baked Taro Root and Bitter melon. It is truly amazing and the spice masala used cuts the bitter taste completely.

Also. I have been drinking it (blend with water) and my sugar level dropped to 3.5. Yikes. So drinking the juice does work

I had a terrible yeast infection for 4 days and it was so bad that my vagina was swollen with pain and itchy like crazy. I ate Bitter Melon my sister cook. I ate it because that is the only thing my sister cooks and for the next two days I feel no itch or pain. That was really weird. I wonder why all of sudden my vagina was better? Then, I remember I ate bitter melons two days ago. It's a natural medicine. If you know how to cook them they will taste good.
