"Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" which was penned by James Weldon Johnson was recognized as the African American national anthem and sung by the survivors of American slavery beginning in 1900. The "Star Bangled Banner" did not become America's "national" anthem until 1931. It was fitting to have LEV & S featured at this gathering because February happens to be African American History Month. Facts!!
