We sang Lift Every Voice and Sing, black and white together, at the Cleveland NAACP event on election eve in 2008 at Lancer's Restaurant, after learning of the victory of Barack Obama as President. It is so important to understand and know the lyrics to this important song, regardless of one's cultural heritage, as this is part of the heritage of all of us in these United States.

My grandma told me about this on the phone last night. Said it reminded her of the Sundays in church when they would sing this song as a congregation. She said it gave you a special feeling to sing it in unison, to sing about this unity among our people, and people would throw their heads back to sing it out, and the song would be in her heart for hours after the church service. Since my grandma attended several churches in her lifetime I asked her which one. "All of them, " she replied.

When I was in grade school in the 70's my teacher had us say the pledge then sing Lift Every Voice every morning. Beautifully done Alicia! Our children should know every word and every verse. Thank you!

I've loved Alica since I was child learning to read music on piano and now to this day she's such a muse and true leader. As a guitarist now, I still can never find more inspiration than Alicia since she will always influence me and this performance is no exception. Wonderful and truly touching!
