ASIAN | How You See Me

"Chinese are not the same as Japanese, are not the same as Koreans, Filipinos, or Thai, or Indians..." We talked with people from a variety of Asian cultures about how they think the world sees them. How does the world see YOU? Do you feel defined by your skin color, gender, or maybe even your religion?

We love to connect with YOU, no matter what language you speak. Help SoulPancake create captions in your language by clicking here:

I love that there is a south Asian person. Most of the time when people say “Asian “ they forget south Asians are a part of that.

It's so ridiculous that when I was a kid, being an Asian, Filipino to be exact, America is like a dream of mine. To go there and live an American life beause I often watch Hollywood shows.

But as I grow up, hearing stories and watching these kinds of shows, it lessens my desire to live in the US. Yes, it's nice to live there, but if you're living in a society where people keeps on belittling you and where you came from, it's just pure toxicity.

I'm proud of being Asian and Filipino. I'm not going to live anywhere. I may travel and work abroad but Asia will always be my home. Southeast Asia is always going to be my home. It is where I belong, where I don't have to conform to the American standards of beauty, ideals, and culture.

" So are Chinese, Japanese or Korean?"

"You have huge eyes for an asian"

There's a huge stereotype that I've heard countless times growing up
"You're Asian? But you don't have small eyes"
For GOODNESS SAKE, Asia is huge. Not everyone from Asia looks a certain way.
You can't look at a person and assume where they're from rudely, it's ignorant.
