For real, I'm in Japan right now. I didn't know how to explain that I was Asian American. So I said I was my ethnicity and American. And the other person went "Ahhh, hafu!" Oh well, I tried.

Starting as a 21 year-old teacher at a Tokyo high school, it took a while to convince my classes that I wasn't an exchange student 😂

The translation method works until another person who knows both languages walks in and is like wtf 😂

Sora taught me that working as an English teacher is the most anime-like job in Japan

i can definitely tell sora was serious about being a teacher based on how he tears apart english lessons on stream. you don't have that kind of knowledge if you did a half ass job.

When you want to tell the teacher a student is using their phone in class, can't find the teacher, then realize you ARE the teacher relates to me so much.

As a mix race Asian Aussie I've had so many similar experiences while teaching in Japan. Many students thought English isn't my native tongue and question me about why I don't look like the "typical" English teacher, they also asked me many strange questions including this question a few times "English is from America. How come you speak English and not Australian?" as well as "you are foreigner. Why don't you look like one, with blue eyes and blonde hair, are you really a foreigner?"

He tells how tough to be an English teacher but it actually fascinates me a lot

I'm a Korean-American and I'd heard stories about others like me teaching english in Korea who were seen as inferior english teachers because of the racism of parents in private schools. Is it sometimes like that in Japanese private schools too?

I've been teaching in Japan for a few years now, and I remind my students just about every week that I'm actually American and not Japanese. Every year at some point I ask them where I'm from and some of them still say "Japan" 🤦‍♀

I'm an Asian American English teacher in Japan, and the students and teachers often think I'm from Asia, and when I tell them I'm from America, their brains seem to crash. Also, I get the feeling that they expect me to speak Japanese fluently, or at least better than a non-Asian English teacher.
