On the 5th anniversary of Deepsea Oddities, we take a look back at some of the most significant creatures discovered over the past three decades-- a space of time in which there have been great leaps forward in ROV technology. Some of these are classic clips which we are revisiting, while others are completely new. What will you see?

For this special segment, you'll find a mix of Jim Gifford tunes including a beautiful new track, a mix of legacy ambients from the Classic Era, and finally some of Jim's work from earlier in 2020.

Thank you so much to all of you for keeping this series alive!♡

Music by Jim Gifford:
Track one: "The Bridge at Dusk"

Track two: "Magnapinna"
Track three: "Bearings"
Track four: "Departure"

All can be found in the Classic Era OST:

Track five: "Blue Wonder"

Exit track: "maybe useful idk"

Born too late to explore the world. Born too early to explore the universe.
*Born just in time to explore these depths of aquatic hell.*

Imagine being the first person to witness the footage of the magnapinna squid. That is absolutely terrifying

*Detecting multiple Leviathan Class lifeforms in the area. Are you sure whatever you're doing is worth it?*

ROVs can record deep sea creatures yet a bank camera can’t record anything properly

Imagine being the ROV operator and seeing one of these on the camera. Amazing. Now, Imagine being in a manned submersible sitting on the Juan de Fuca hydrothermal vent fields 8, 000 feet underwater with countless unimaginable creatures around your vehicle. I've been there and other places like it. I was a pilot of the DSV 4 Sea Cliff. A 20, 000 foot capable manned submarine. At the time the worlds deepest diving sub. Mind blowing!

as an aspiring creature designer, the deep sea is literally a gold mine of unique ideas that is grounded in realism cause it actually exists

I don’t know if anyone else here is into Paleontology, but the Squid Worm (which I didn’t know existed) looks EXTREMELY similar to the 500 million year old fossil “Marella” from the Burgess Shale when it’s body is vertical, or perpendicular to the camera. It’s almost uncanny! it gave me goosebumps and with that music... 🔥🔥🔥🔥

The most bizarre is the siphonophore. Thank you. Happy holidays for all kisses from Angola

The one time Japanese people discover a sea creature and it has a million tentacles, if there's a god he has a sense of humour

Siphonophores have to be among the coolest and strangest of deep-sea creatures. I will never cease to be astounded by the myriad shapes and sizes they can possess.

The sheer eerieness of these species so elusive make this planet's oceans so much more beautiful and intriguing to explore.

Again, congratulations on 5 years! I might sound like a broken record, but I love how consistent the feeling of the videos have been over these years!

so cool to see how life still finds a way to live in such environments

I love how in most examinations of these deep underwater creatures the general consensus is "Yeah, we don't know what the hell this thing is, besides that it vaguely looks like these other creatures. Enjoy the fact that these ocean creatures are literally enigmas made of water, jelly, and a few dashes of nightmare fuel!"
