SciShow explores a place that’s as beautiful as it is dangerous: Mexico’s Giant Crystal Cave, where chemistry has created the world’s largest crystals -- but in an environment so hostile that you’d only survive a few minutes if you saw them without the right protection. But it’s safe inside! Come on in!

I'm envious of those miners who originally found that, would be such a great feeling.

For those wondering, yes this is what the crystal caves were based on in Dark Souls

That cave is so awesome, thank you for sharing. I actually learned how the crystals formed, something the program I watched on it the other year didn't touch on at all, if memory serves.

I first read about that cave in a book about rocks. I also heard my life is boring, and that I should stop reading books about rocks. So I came here to YouTube and found this awesome video!

I started coughing uncontrollably when he was describing how one dies in that cave

I was pleasantly surprised to see this included in the "Science of Ripley's Believe It Or Not" exhibit we're currently hosting at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. I had watched "How the Earth Changed History" with Iain Stewart only a few months before. The first 20 minutes of the first episode features this cave and Stewart explains why they have to wear the protective gear.

So now, I love engaging guests on all this stuff about the cave's history and formations and why they have to wear the suit.I wrap up with explaining how you can drown in the air while in that cave. That always gets some wide-eyed reactions.

So... what happened to all the water they pumped out? Did they just dump it into the nearest river? Was any of it ever analyzed to see if it had any interesting substances or organisms in it?

The fact that some people in the comments seem to think they know better than the scientists actually studying and navigating the caves is so baffling to me.

Can you talk about the Catatumbo lightning in Venezuela? The Wikipedia entry says " [It] occurs during 140 to 160 nights a year, 10 hours per day and up to 280 times per hour" which is just awesome. I think it would be cool if you could give us an overview of the atmospheric science behind it! :)

Fascinating, beautiful--and I couldn't stop thinking how much Katelyn Salem probably wished that this could have been HER story to guest host, or even more, to travel to for a visit.
