I don't think anyone outside of teaching realises the severe psychological and mental toll of this job. Lots of teachers on pills, alcohol, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. It's shocking. We can't be expected to meet all student needs when our needs are not being met.

Observation culture, blame games, bullying and unrealistic demands are the issues!

Jada and her Red Table Talk brigade were talking about a girl who was bullied to suicide and Jada was like "i dont understand why the teachers didnt do something." and im sitting there like gurrrl. At the place im teaching now ... Seriously. If i had to stop the whole f_ck^n CLASS every single time a student said something racist, said something sexist, said something homophobic, said something ignorant about someone else's religion, said a curse word, or verbally abused someone, i would LITERALLY NEVER get anything done.

as a combat veteran, I'd rather go back to Iraq then deal with kids everyday and fighting parents and such, you hit the nail on the head. This came in my feed because i am a former HM1, USN with the SEABEES and USMC, all those symptoms you said, are exactly what I felt overseas...so, teachers, welcome to the corps! Semper Fi, respect you all! Devil Doc

I left the profession this year after just one year. I’ve had panic attacks, fainted, and called out almost every month. I am so much happier going back to my original profession. I feel bad for those working in the education field it feels almost impossible to be happy.

six months ago one kid, ONE, told an admin (at an autozone) that she didn't like her teacher.
well, the following Monday, the entire second grade teaching team, myself included, were called into a meeting where we were all given written and verbal warnings because a single student said she didn't like a teacher...

so after that my stress levels heightened. I had to make sure I was peak babying the students in order to avoid the parents and admin.

I cannot tell you how glad I am that I quit.

Complex PTSD is much more extreme than regular PTSD, it's the equivalent of being a prisoner of war

My World Studies teacher told us there was a study that concluded school teachers have higher stress levels than soldiers in combat. We laughed not because we didn’t believe him, but because we could actually see that.
Also it didn’t help that our World Studies teacher missed his calling as a stand up Comedian cause the way he acted out “going postal” if it wasn’t for teachers getting summer vacation was hilarious 😂. But no, seriously, I’m very sorry for what you guys go through.

Yeah. I quit my full time ongoing teaching job last term, and I'm now casual. It's so much better. Expectations, stress, anxiety, depression, exhaustion, on the brink of a nervous break down. The pissy little pay, and the tiny scraps of joy, and the hope that it might get better...not fucking worth it.

You are a great spokesperson for teachers! It's unreal how much abuse we have to endure! I'm glad people are finally talking about it.

This. 100%. Real.

Keep raising awareness about this.

Everyday feels like I'm going to war and I have to be hyper vigilant.

Teaching in 21st century America 🇺🇸 sucks...like really bad.

Thank you 🙏 for raising awareness about teaching and PTSD.

Watching this and reading the comments is so validating. It's hard to sleep being put in a constant state of stress. And the thing is, only teachers can understand teacher stress. It's hard for anyone outside of teaching to grasp the trauma that is teaching right now.

I quit the private ESL industry this month. I now work in a warehouse. Best job I work and it pays more. It's way more relaxed than teaching although I do miss my students. I can now focus on drawing manga, creating enterprises, etc. Teaching sucked out my time and energy to the point where my sole existence was work only. Teaching consumed me :(

Thank you for making this video. Some of us still need to hear it because we're hitting our breaking point later than others. No one understands like a teacher (who has taught outside of "Mayberry"). I'm tired of the gaslighting by people who haven't experienced what we do daily.

I needed to hear this. Curled up in a ball and terrified of going to work every day because of a parent filing non-compliance and being picked apart by admin.

Unbelievable. I didn't know teachers had to deal with stress and anxiety for doing their job. I loved my teachers, I could see most of them tried very hard and cared about us, but they didn't get the respect and appreciation they deserved. I will show more gratitude for my teachers and show them I appreciate them. I'm glad you quit because no one should put up with that. I hope you're doing better now.

My kids had such a horrible year in middle school that I feel like our whole family has PTSD from it. We're pulling out for next year. Even a bunch of teachers are leaving.

Admin makes a huge difference. The admin i work for is completely understanding when you take a day off, only has meetings if 100% necessary, never expects us to contact her outside of work hours. So many of the teachers that quit do so bc admin wont respect their boundaries.

A lot of the points you mentioned described my first year of teaching. I was mentally in a bad spot, because I had an administrator that wanted to get even with my mentor teacher by taking it out on me. For example, they did a walkthrough on a Friday morning class with 5 minutes remaining. They told me the bell to bell crap, when I rewarded my students who got done with the week’s assignments by letting them play games on their phones. For the most part it was a hostile environment. Students made videos about me and made memes about me. They vandalized my classroom and my car. The funny thing was the administrators took the side of the students and didn’t renew my contract. The person that replaced me resigned after two years. I wonder why? Sarcasm!

I had a very similar experience at a private boarding school. Part of the issue was just the insane work schedule. It wasn't just teaching. After teaching all day, then you were expected to lead an afternoon activity until dinner time. Think you're done? Nope. After dinner, then you usually have some sort of Dorm duty -- often until all the kids have gone to bed at 1 or 2am. Then you have to get up at 6am to get ready for another day. Think you have weekends off? Nope. The entire weekend is spent taking kids to activities. In between all that, Administrators had to justify their high salaries by always giving Teachers more bs work to do. Due to this and all the other horrors mentioned in the video, I started developing health problems. The school was, of course, completely unsupportive. That was it for teaching for me. No amount of money is worth your health, emotionally or physically. Because that often stays with you. Long after you've left the job. Teaching in this country is not worth it.
