I believe Mordecai’s situation can best be summed up in a quote from Red Forman.
“You don’t have bad luck. The reason that bad things happen to you, is because you’re a dumbass.”

This episode hit me hard bro… Back when it released, it was around the exact same time my gf broke up with me (tho, there was no drama like this love triangle, it was just a regular breakup). Watching this and then Dumptown USA felt so bad… To this date, this ost from Mordecai and Margaret’s memories always comes to my mind when i remember my first gf.

Mordecai loved the idea of Margaret but didn't even know her well. He messed up his relationship with CJ because of his own bad actions. I don't like Margaret but her and CJ were too good for him.

It's like in adventure time, the protagonist is initially in love with a girl but can not become a relationship, then he finds another girlfriend, he stays there for a while but ends up ruining everything

Who else thinks that Mordecai was still in love with Margaret even tho he told CJ He didn't feel that way towards her anymore. and even after him and CJ got back together he said I don't want to be with anyone else but you? Who else thinks that was a lie?

Honestly Margaret didn’t love Mordecai the way he loved her, he was in love with her and she only loved the idea of him and that’s why she never showed the same feelings 100%. Opposed to CJ who was in love with him but now Mordecai was hurt and wasn’t ready but knew he did care a lot about her. But because he was hurt before he’s scared to love another woman the way he did before because of his fear of being hurt yet again.

Literally all Mordecai had to do was just prepare CJ before the party by saying, "Hey, my ex is going to be there."

When I first watched this show, I’d never been in a relationship or experienced real love. So the whole thing between Mordecai and Margret and eventually CJ always bugged me. It seemed obvious to me that Mordecai should move on from Margret. It’s seemed obvious that CJ was the girl for him and he needlessly hurt her because of his lingering feelings for Margret. I always thought Mordecai was a pathetic simp and that Margret led him on and then went off to college without him.

But now that I’ve experienced love and a break up, I realize now how awesome this show was for putting such complicated feelings into it. Love isn’t something you can switch off. I was with my boyfriend for a year and suddenly he decided to break it off with me because he “Never felt a spark” with me. And I always thought myself to be someone strong and confident who could get over my feelings instantly, but I’m not. The thoughts of him and my relationship with him plague me, even though it’s been some time since I’ve seen him. Even when I think I’ve healed, I’ll see him on social media posting pics of his apartment and then here I am, accidentally scratching open a wound I thought had scared over. I feel like even now, if I were to start a new relationship, I wouldn’t be ready because I would be thinking about him instead of the new person I’d be dating and that wouldn’t be fair to them.

Mordecai did what he could I think and waited before moving on to CJ. Margret had been gone for a long time, hadn’t spoken to him in months, and he seemed to find someone who he had a lot in common with and he really seemed to love her. But then Margret came back, not for Mordecai but for herself, and happened to reopen the wound that they both had. And she did have feelings for him, they just weren’t the same love he had for her- which makes sense. Mordecai had a huge crush on her for ages, but she didn’t see him that way until later. Who knows, if they had started a real relationship maybe her feelings would have deepened which is what typically happens. But she was always dating someone, or in the middle of wanting to be single, and Mordecai was always too afraid to make a move on her. But even in that moment, I don’t think Margret meant to kiss Mordecai and get in the way of his relationship. I’m pretty sure she had a boyfriend when this happened. So they both ere in the same situation. They both just clearly had lingering feelings that hadn’t dissipated. This isn’t excusing what they did, but it does show that they’re way more complex that typical characters in even some shows made for adults.

Love is dangerous that way, those feelings remain, especially if it’s your first relationship or someone you really felt seriously about. I used to think so black and white about it, kinda like Rigby does. That there was a bad guy, Mordecai and his “simp” like qualities and Margret dating other guys who “weren’t good for her” even though we never got to see her relationships from her perspective. They’re just complicated characters trying to figure out what they want. It sucks that CJ got caught up in the middle.

I think the thing I applaud this show for, even though no one ever brings it up, is how Mordecai did grow in the end. He found someone later in life who was actually a match for him, after he’d grown as a man and learned who he was and what he wanted in a relationship. It wasn’t with Margret or CJ or anyone we know from the show. It didn’t happen in his 20s. It wasn’t a fairytale…it was just regular. And that actually really gives me hope. I heard love is supposed to find you, and it isn’t always flashy or immediate when it does. I really want to believe that. But seeing a character like Mordecai and his complex emotions is actually pretty validating. Love for someone else doesn’t immediately go away, it’s how you handle and channel those feelings that shows growth and healing.
