Another thing about the fact that they can't actively shoot them : because older quills have a weak bond with the skin, when the animal does a sudden fast movement (such as turning) the old quills can sometimes detach themselves and thus the porcupine "shoots" them, that is why it was belived that they could shoot them as will, they can of course "shoot" them, but is accidentaly more than anything

If a predator has encountered a porcupine one-time and got quills in them.
They know a second time to turn tail and run the opposite direction if they do not want to get quills in them again.

Fun story from when I worked in EMS. I walked into a patient's home and they had a porcupine in their living room. Out of the corner of my eye I thought it was a boar.. so I looked wondering wtf, and nope it was a freaking huge porcupine. Lol I had them put it out. I definitely didn't need to freak it out or accidentally run into it while moving the stretcher. Lol 😂 it was an African porcupine in rural Mississippi just chilling next to some pit bulls in someones living room.
