My grandfather was trained in Kendo during that era. He was able to take down a robber holding him at knifepoint using just his umbrella. It is so true that it was an effective method as a self-defense. Thanks for sharing.

While I was stationed in Japan, I had the opportunity to spar with the High School kids, and they were fast - both boys and girls. Then, another opportunity to spar and train with the ishikawa police, and they were more aggressive & combative in their approach. It was a great experience.

This was the style of Kendo my teacher, Sensei Morgan espoused. I had my men ripped off more than once, and was thrown around with sweeps and Judo style trips as well. He explained why he was so loud during keiko, and what the different kiai's were for and how to properly scream them. He showed why you don't "overpower" your strikes and come up on your toes forward, or have no support going back. His friend and study partner, Shikai Sensei (Chuo Dojo - Los Angeles), had a technique outlawed in their kendo tournament days. Apparently, they would attack from the crouching position during rei, and easily knock their opponent down or score an ippon. I am currently studying Iaido, and it's been a very long time since I've donned the armor. When my sensei passed, he gave me his old armor, and it actually still fits, although I do need new kotei. Thanks for the video, Chadi, it brought back some memories.

This video just proved that when it comes to martial arts, wrestling is king. No matter what type of combat you do, modern or old school, people will always resort to grappling, wrestling when they run out of options.

Budoshingi Truth in budo, , , should always be our quest. Truth can not be found without challenge. Truth lies in combat. Iam a 61 year old Shihan ranked in Kyokushin Karate and also yudansha in jujitsu and battojutsu. I wanted to study Kendo, , but found that its rules and methods were not designed to make one a better swordman, , , , but rather a better kendo player. I competely agree with you Chadi , ,this is more right direction. I would like to learn more if there is any group working toward this method.

My own hakama can take me down with a leg sweep... never mind an opponent.

Great video Chani! When I was younger I had to train against a huge steroid taking skinhead (with the Swaztika tattoo) bodybuilder with arms bigger than my thighs! I couldn't move him when doing standing Judo but caught him in the wheel throw where you block his shin/knee and it worked! Taught me that even monsters can be thrown and to train the throws you don't think would ever work. Seriously this guy was huge and cut and I was about 220 lbs or 100 kilos and 6 foot tall at the time and he made me look tiny.

I practice Aikido but this is very interesting and also relatable to some of things my teacher stresses over and over, thanks for sharing a great video. Very insightful narration too. I love it!!!

I would say this is still part of Kendo even though it is irregular. I had a Japanese 7dan kendo teacher who regularly put me to the ground and encurraged me to try the same. Of course you can't do that with kids or elderly! Foot sweep are also part of some shiai as you mentioned youself and that is still modern kendo.
As for the striking zones, no one said that hits to unprotected areas wouldn't be effective. It's just that if you can hit the wrist with consistently accuracy there is no reason to go for the the elbow, so we practice hitting the one target that is protected on our partner. It's really not so hard to understand. That is what is practiced in the dojo. In shiai hits to the elbow of the kote often score. Anyway, great video!

The same applies to Judo. I am 68' years "young", practicing Judo since the age of 10. Many things I did learn were not accepted on tournaments.
