Good review bro. I hope it works out well for them. If this attracts more users to GNU/Linux it is a good thing. If eye candy and additional tweaks helps them sell more systems then more power to them.

It's a good idea. It's exactly what System76 should do.

I hope it won't become just another distro. I truly believe System76 will work on the backend of this distro .

I'm running it on my 3rd Generation Meerkat from System76. It run's well. I like that it is not loaded down with crap. I can install the stuff I want easy enough. To the crowd that does not like this idea, well, I fall into the "if it makes people come to linux it's great" crowd.

It's a great initiative for a computer company to support Linux out of the box. One thing that can be improved I think is the DE that they used, they can use MATE or XFCE to lower down resource requirements, something that can be used as an advantage against Apple or Microsoft.

Two years later: GOOD idea. Best leap distro out there. I am a rolling guy myself but for anyone not wanting a non-rolling distro Pop! is my #1 recommendation.

I have no proof, but system 76 has to have more up there sleeve for gnome them just theming. I'm sure they will assist with bugs and support gnome extensions also. I think the distro looks very clean, modern and professional.

I don't like Gnome 3 but I think it's a good idea!

Hi Big Daddy,
I still consider it early days for pop!_os. Ideally, I'd love to see more creative apps installed, especially if they're billing themselves as a Linux OS for creatives. Applications like GIMP, Inkscape, Kdenlive and Ardour would be welcomed additions to the effort along with a couple more Gnome extensions like dash-to-dock.

hey, the death of Unity is what started System76 down this path. overall, I like it!

System76 are a good OEM like Linux manufacturer, that designed their own update systems for their products, who've did the right thing by deciding to ship all their systems with Ubuntu based Linux OS's. But, if they are to be successful in creating their own Ubuntu based OS, they should probably do a lot better, by designing a brand new desktop enviroment. Gnome can be a bit heavy, so even if they did design their own desktop enviroment, forking some of the extentions into their Ubuntu based OS natively is a better than just using Gnome.

I think its a good idea, I use Chakra Linux on my laptop, similar type idea I thought, so why not and its bound to work well.

I've seen some negative comments regarding System 76's "OS" in community. Well, opinions are like rectums...everyone's got one so here's mine (opinion, not rectum). I understand the argument that adding wallpapers, a theme and enabling a couple extensions is not technically creating a distro. I read somewhere they added some drivers as well. No mention of what those drivers are. However! Because the two players here are System 76 and Ubuntu, I say "I don't care" System 76 has been using Ubuntu as the primary OS since the began selling their hardware and Ubuntu kind of pulled the rug out from under them. I think they waited to see what Ubuntu was going to do with GNOME and it wasn't good enough. They probably didn't like the near vanilla GNOME experience Ubuntu is dishing out for 17.10. And let's honest, GNOME should probably be And that comes from a guy who use GNOME Shell exclusively.
System76 said "Screw Ubuntu" and used Ubuntu to increase their brand image.
But take what I said with a grain of salt.... I'm not a big fan of Ubuntu (I do appreciate what they have done for Linux), I think System 76 is too expensive and the POP! theme doesn't tickle my fancy. (which has no relation to my rectum)
And BTW, Big YOU DA MAN! :)

Given that this is "alpha" I expect them to do some amazing stuff by

Truthfully, I'm all for it. Good on them. This is their first release and I think there will be more to the distro later down the line. If not, does it really matter? I don't think that it does. I mean, Hell, look at all the SystemBack distros that popped up. If some drunken nerdy dork can do it, why not a reputable company that puts out pcs and laptops with linux? Just my 2¢.

Yes Mr.... It's a good idea.... After all, they sell computers and the distro may have they own name too, :P

New linux user here, POP!_OS or Ubuntu 17.10, does anybody have an opinion? Can anybody help?

It looks beautiful, but it's still GNOME...

I think they're just trying to takeover ubuntu, they probably feel going back to vanilla gnome its just a different debian or something. Instead of promoting ubuntu preinstalled on their systems - which would pretty much be gnome shell and another companies distro on top, why not just do the bare minimum, that way when people look for linux computers instead of looking for ubuntu, they will be asking for system76 and pop! os instead, which is a smart decision for them imo.
Purge ubuntu's name out of their products and take ownership is likely the idea.

expected a lot more from system76 than this, just themes and a set of wallpapers for an "os". expected at least apps to be added and
extensions like dash to dock. just for that i am not going to download this crap
