None of the movies seem to capture the death scene from the book.
In my opinion Paul allows himself to be killed. In the previous and current chapter Paul loses his best friend. He has noone left. He is lost and out of hope.
He is an old hand and understands the dangers of the front very well. The final paragraph is preceded by the simple sentence "I stand up."
Even the 3rd person description explains, "...his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come."

The saddest death scene out of all the all quiet on the western front movies. The storyline of the 1979 and the character development of the 1979 version is the best and wayy better than the 2022 or 1930 versions

My great uncle was a sniper in the battle of the Muse-Argonne and he told me that most snipers on both sides tried to wound the target instead of kill because it would take more soldiers to tend to the wounded than just kill him. However, towards the end of the war they did start killing them but really not so much.

this version of the movie was better than the mindless action bullshit that tried to portray politicians as angels of peace.
