Unfortunately, as this is valve, there will never be a steam VR 3.0.

looks like Valve is getting ready to launch it's own entire ecosystem for apps & games to run in VR or desktop/steam deck.
They are building their own hardware & software, this is the only way to ensure complete compatibility over all your products.

Between this and SteamOS 3.5 it's absolutely crazy seeing Valve revamp all their software. Can't shake the feeling that it's building up to a certain something

I like the direction that makes it seem like this is made for a stand alone headset. The massive updates to SteamVR on Linux a bit ago (going from almost unusable to completely fixed) were a complete tip off already, but this SteamVR 2.0 drop felt really refreshing. It is still rough around the edges (HOW DO YOU EXIT?!), but it's a big step up from the old interface.

It looks cleaner tho in my mind I thought 2.0 was going to be a performance update primarily with UI changes added in on the side. Makes sense it's mainly a UI change for now tho.

We Want to test the gaming performance and stability of STEAM VR 2.0 Beta vs. STEAM VR 1.0
I remember back in early 2020 STEAM VR 1.0 Beta was so stable no lag no stutter, but yes it depends on the game and how it's demanding, i played Half-Life Alyx VR in Beta it was so stable with high fps, and after complete SteamVR Update Latest 2020 it becomes stuttering, less fps in games same previous game settings

Definitely the main (and frankly only change i care about) is the friends and chats interface. I use steam chat to talk to friends, and i always needed to join the call on my desktop, and sometimes steamcalls would bug out or timeout and i needed to reconnect, meaning i needed to awkwardly waddle over to my desktop and have my controllers dangling over my keyboard trying to rejoin the call with the headset half off my head. This change is a huge help for that

On one hand, I'm excited about this, and what it potentially means for the future (Index 2?).... but also, SteamVR performance is still lightyears behind OpenXR, so I avoid it entirely.

Ive been looking forward to this release for a long time. To be honest I was hoping for some under the hood improvements to performance and stability with his version, looks like more of a UI update than anything. There are some decent quality of life improvements though.

I hope this update is to coincide with the rumoured new headset and valve PCVR console. Would love a console type device that I can have in my living room that allows me to play PC VR games 🙌

The third update is just going to be called Alyx, im sure this update will only live a half life. Im just taking a page out of valves index.

I hope this rumored SteamVR System is real, I’ve been wanting to experience VR for a long time but not have to invest in expensive/complicated PC setup or MobileVR.

But I’m also particularly interested in it’s potential Non-VR Functions. Like..can it run those PS5 Games (Returnal, Rachet, Radiohead etc) without a PS5?

Too good to be true. I’m immensely intrigued to know what they’re working on.

Okay so it’s a slight upgrade on the interface basically so nice .

One thing I would like though would be some software included to convert standard 2d games /movies to 3D rather than having to rely on other software like vorpx etc

A standalone vr headset from valve for ~600€ with knuckle controllers and comfortable size would be so good.
