I love this speech by Shepherd because he is absolutely right, and it has aged perfectly. Every fight is our fight.
We gave the Afghanistan government and military the tools and know-how they needed to acquire freedom. But we could never give them that freedom. They needed to achieve that themselves, and they failed spectacularly (the Afghan govt/military failed as did the United States government). And now unfortunately, the people of Afghanistan will suffer because of it.
If the Afghan military forces won’t fight to protect themselves, then there was no amount of help we could give them that would be enough. And for that; as a leftist who supports internationalism, I respect Biden’s decision to end the War in Afghanistan. I’m glad the United States is now in one less forever war. We can and should continue to use our power to help the people of Afghanistan and other nations, but not prop up their government and military forces who won’t help themselves.
