This video is Part 9 in the Naming Organic Compounds series

This nomenclature tutorial video takes you through the IUPAC rules for naming halogen containing compounds called alkyl halides. Examples include single and multi-substituted haloalkanes including unsaturated and cyclic compounds

Many students struggle with naming because they attempt to come up with the entire name at once and often wind up missing a piece or two. After this series you won't have that problem anymore

you're great. I watched all your videos on organic chemistry and you did better than my prof did in explaining this. Thank you! I just subscribed by the way :)

Multiple sources would say that the exact IUPAC name of this compound 6:33 is 4-chlorobut-1-ene. I understand that both ways are virtually the same, but I'm curious why some say it's 4-chlorobut-1-ene, and some say it's 4-chloro-1-butene.

I have a question. . in the last example there is a pie bond so isn't it supposed to be HEPTENE instead of BUTENE?

Wouldn't the 2-iodo-5-mehtylhexane be giving 2 to I since it is a higher priority than a methyl group and not because i is before m in the alphabet?

with the last example, 4-chloro-1-butene is the same as 4-chlorobutene right? Without the 1?
