Secret to Learning To Code | JavaScript Mentor Session #learntocode

When learning to code, one of the major things that most beginners forget is that, learning to code is just one part of things. The second part, that's equally as important, is you knowing how to explain your code to other people.

In this video I'll be showing you a clip of a mentor session I did with one of my new students as he's practicing explaining the programming logic that he wrote for the two JavaScript problems that I had him work on.

Make sure you watch his explanation for both problems because this student did a phenomenal job explaining his code!

And make sure to support my channel by liking this video and subscribing to my channel, I have a lot more interviews like this with beginners coming soon. So comment below to let me know your thoughts!

00:00 introduction

50% - Learning to code and other 50% how to explain your code to other people
Soft skills - How to convince others if you're the one who really wrote that code ?
Technical interview process - are you able to explain the code to other person, even if answer is wrong; can you explain your thought process with regards to the code
Everyone does hard work learning technical things but ignore soft skill of explaining code during coding interview
Practice explaining programming logic as much as possible
Main thing to focus on explaing the code is explaining the "why", as other person can see the code but won't know your thought process why you wrote that line of code

03:03 mentor session
- ingrain how to think in JS and problem solving techniques
- just like math class, review and redo practice problems, it's like doing reps but don't memorize how to solve. As it's about problem solving, goal is the understand why
are you doing particular route to solve a problem
- practice talking out loud, explaining yourself what code is doing

05:55 student explaining the code
- use comments
- take step by step
- talk out loud about your approach and code
- building confidence by better understanding of what you're doing and why you're doing particular step
- explaining the problems and your solution to non technical person like your brother and see if other person gets it

just wow! 😍 i got here via a link on a coding board.. i'm just starting out myself and have hundreds of little tasks to get my setup environment functioning, simply to bang out a few "Hello, worlds!" so the beginning little chit-chat (to me) seemed it might be just too tedious to get through—i was wrong. so glad i stayed and watched through. your technique is utterly engaging and opened my eyes to how to better grasp concepts that rn, i'm simply in the soup with. the demonstration was also moving and showed genuine humanity behind all these 1s and 0s. the young man's pride is delightful. 🙏 bravo! 💐

I have really been enjoying your channel and learning a lot about the programming industry. I currently have a 3d printing business and have had to do a lot what I believe is coding through vscode and machine firmware "marlin". I got a much better understanding of it. It is not exactly web coding but figure I have at least a good grasp of some form of coding. I need a back up plan because the economy is not looking good and have found myself working 14 hour days as these damn machines constantly break lol. Granted I have freedom to stop anytime I want to take a break, it is still very stressful and feel I can gain a better living working for a larger company. My problem right now is trying to figure out what type of coding I would like to enter into. Most videos about the subject just talk about coding as if it was a single blanket industry and not the specific types.

It'd be awesome if you could make your coding courses more accessible especially to Africans who are looking for opportunities to learn but do not have the means
