Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :) #garden #gardening #harvest

With the strawberries, it could be both. I grow a couple of white varieties. Mainly for two reasons, one the birds don't know they are ripe, and two the kids don't know they are ripe lol

The energy you emitted when you say "let's get into it" always puts a smile on my face. I really needed this video today. Thanks Mark!

I love how aggressively polite you are in your into. "Let's *jams thumb in air* get into it."

Did you know that you can use part of a growing cucumber without it spoiling the growing fruit. I've done it, I took about a 4" piece off a growing one, it was more than enough for me. The over then next few hours the remaining cuc on the plant covered the cut with a callus and continued to grow. No wastage and no loss... neat trick eh?

I'm so happy this channel exploded. Been watching you for a while, and I've always appreciated the advice you've given.
I just finished my first Spring/Summer garden, and I got so many green beans, Zucchini, and Kale. I remember so many random tips you gave me, and that's a gift I'll always appreciate. Thank you.

I would love a video about the edible part of vegetables and fruit
Because most chefs have brainwashed people into throwing away a big part of edible food just for the looks
What do you think?

I learnt during the lockdown how to plant a vegetable garden. There’s no turning back now.

G'day Mark.
I'd like to reply with something constructive and helpful to anyone who sees this, but I'm still laughing at the bit with the kale. 🤣
You looked like Rudolph's long lost cousin... Mark, the Kale Eared Reindeer. 🤣
Always enjoy that humour.

All the best and take care mate.

Thank you Mark. 🙂
I've noticed with my blackberries that they're shiney as they ripen. Those are great for jam or cobbler. The ones that have lost their shine are the instant gratification.☺️
Blessings and hugs! 💜🤗

I’ve started filling a garden bed that I made from pallets. I’m glad I have you to watch.

There was the biggest bumper crop of Bartlett pears this year at my dad's farm. The trees were hanging heavy and the deer were having a grand feast eating right from the tree. We picked the hard large green pears and the pears ripened brown and full of sugars. What a treat!

Don't press on the body of an avocado. Press gently near the top (where the stem was). This will help you avoid bruising in random spots, while still giving the same indication.

I did exactly that with my beets, picked them early and boiled them for pickling. Then diced up the leaves & doused in olive oil and sea salt & roasted them. Beet top chips, soo good!
