Jainism Explained

Jainism, some called it the world’s most peaceful religion. Its monks are famous worldwide for their strict adherence to non-violence. Going as far as to sweep the floor as they walk to avoid stepping on lifeforms, covering their mouths as to not swallow or breath hot air on living creatures, and following a strict vegetarian diet that not only bans all meat, fish, and eggs but also potatoes!!! So what is Jainism and why is it considered the world’s most peaceful religion.

Their ancient philosophy has garnered the eye of the modern world as their ideas of non-violence, strict vegetarianism, and what could be called an environmentalist outlook are strikingly relevant.

Jains have been highly influential in India for thousands of years. Shaping it's vegetarian-friendly diet and lending the concept of Ahimsa to Gandhi's independence movement.

A Jain is someone who accepts the teachings of the Tirthankaras. 'Jainism' comes from the word “Jina”.

Tirthankaras are the most important people in Jainism. They have removed all their attachments to the world and during their lifetimes they managed to break free from the cycle of rebirth and death that Jains believe keeps souls trapped on Earth.

Do you think you could handle the Jain monk lifestyle? I know that I'd be finished as soon as I saw someone eating chips!

The symbol of the Nazi regime should never be called a "swastika". The word is from the Sanskrit "su" meaning "good" and "asti" meaning "being" (so "swasti" basically means well-being").

The Nazis called their symbol a "Hakenkreutz" meaning "hooked-cross" in German.

Fun fact: State of Gujarat is predominantly vegetarian because of Jain folk Hemachandra despite being a Coastal and predominantly Hindu state. This is since 8th century.

All Indian religions have the same base dharma, karma and moksha .it's a way of life rather than religion.

As a Jain from a significantly religious and spiritual background, I have to say this was a pretty accurate introduction to Jainism. This religion is pretty misunderstood and I'm glad you cleared things up for the non-Jain folk who are curious!

I’m Hindu but I love Jain philosophy, the largest Jain gathering happens in my state Karnataka, once in 12 years. And the good thing is others also attend it and take part in it.

I've had my non-Jain friends always asking that I'm killing organisms all the time, even while I'm writing this but here's the thing. Until and unless you don't kill something on purpose, it is fine but if you try saving them, that is religion to us. My grandpa designed our house in a way that we don't need to use artificial light till 7 pm, sunlight is enough. This is the kind of dedication we have for the religion and ahimsa.

At the time of Aurangzeb, the rich jains of Gujarat used to buy goats at the time of Bakrid to stop them from being slaughtered. One time, Gujrat had no goats left and Aurangzeb had to ban this tradition. They still do it to this day.

Tho I barely knew anything about Jainism but have always thought of it as an extremely beautiful religion. I had a Jain friend in my class and I kid you not she was the most polite girl in the entire class. I remember in our farewell after party she refused to eat anything as she was skeptic In what utensils they cooked food. Like she didn’t want to eat the food made in a utensil which was used to make meat and basically she didn’t eat garlic and onion so.
I remember thinking like “this must be hard for her” and admiring all Jains who have it tough but still stick to their faith.
Y’all have my respect.
