Eternabond/RV Roof tape.....Does it work?

Spoilers....all roof tapes as sealant is garbage and not better than duct tape. I do not recommend it for most roof repairs. It is expensive, ALWAYS peels up and leaves the biggest mess to clean up afterward. Here I have to fix a leaking front cap due to eternbond not working.

1. There were CLEARLY issues with seam failure before eternabond was applied.
2. Because of that failure it was not possible to correctly istall it.

The owner of that RV was just using it as a crutch to kick the can down the road. I've got eternabond on my RV thats over 10 years old and its working just fine.

I put Eeternabond on all the caulked joints on my Rockwood shortly after I purchased it new in 2012. I have had no failures of any kind. It looks as good as it did when I originally installed it. I believe success or failure is very much dependent on carefully following the manufacturer's installation instructions.

I used Eternabond to re-seal all my roof seams and around the skylights and fan shrouds. It works great. Its a pain to apply it sometimes but again I have had zero issues with it.

The problem is the front cap was loose If it is attached correctly the Eternabond would be just fine. I applied mine 6 years ago and is still in great condition, correct application is also important.

I was a coatings rep for a well know provider for many years, industrial, contractor, and retail. The most important step is preparation of the substrate. Clean, clean, clean...no shortcuts if you want it to last. Usually means scraping, sanding, scrubbing. The highest quality product will fail if the underlayment is not properly cleaned and prepared. Even cheap materials will last years with appropriate prep. Just saying.

Eternabone doesn’t crack. And you can’t peel it off that easy. That has to be a different type of tape.

I just spent hours tearing it off the front two corners of my camper roof. It failed bigtime and the water was running under it and leaking into my camper walls. I just applied the stuff two years ago. Thanks for posting the video. Its a little late for me but this video can save other folks the hours of redo's, interior damage and frustration.

Sure do appreciate your videos. Clearly this fix was not done properly. The RV now can withstand the elements and it's owner can have peace of mind. Thank you James for your many years of experience and sharing your knowledge. Happy trails!

It is great, he doesn't like it because it cuts him out of some business.

The tape works good on my RV. And silicone is exactly what you dont want to use on any seam or roof of an RV

That does not look like Eternabond. It actually looks like the Dicor Self-Adhesive Patch which comes in that exact color and sizes as Eternabond.

This guy is getting a kick back from dicor🙄🤣

Kinda funny how you're the only one complaining about it. It doesn't look like it was installed correctly to start with and it's certainly not duct tape. If you want to keep Dicor rich then keep using their lap sealant that you have to check for cracks and leaks every six months. If you apply eternabond correctly and make sure to properly clean the surface then it holds up.

After reading through the comments (kudos for taking time to answer these folks!), it would seem less an issue of product quality per se (you got a lot or testimonials as to its efficacy), and more of proper appliction. If all you have is a hammer, every problem starts looking like a nail. If I was eternabond, I'd jump on the first plane to pick your brain to see if I could improve my product, OR develop one that could serve the purpose of securing/sealing end caps and the like. You came highly regarded by RV Hillbilly BTW.

So I bought a 1995 Ford E350 Tioga nightmare hell on Wheels was totally neglected! But somebody within the last 20 years replace the front vent and they used eternal Bond tape that was the only piece on the motorhome underneath everything that was not rotted the screws were immaculate shape! The screws literally look like they came out of the box fresh it was the only area that did not leak. I agree with a lot of people on here it's definitely the prop work that makes the tape work the best. We will find out because I bought four rolls of it and I'm redoing my roof this week!

I understand the cons that you are explaining here and I agree with you, but I wonder how hard the self leveling would be to redo or repair if a spot still had a leak. Butyl tape seems like a good, long time go to product and easy to remove, and replace.

You might have shown an example of removing the self leveling stuff, just to hit home with proof.

But I believe you are correct in your criticism, and thank you.

I keep a roll in my RV too. It is a bandaid that people use for permanent repais. I would never buy a used RV with more than maybe 2 Eternabond patches, and depending on where it was patched.
