Dr. Nathan Moore and PT Taiwo Adeshigbin discuss the recovery timeline following knee replacement surgery.

Everyone is different, and every case has to be considered independently. For most individuals, after a total knee replacement, they are 90% back to normal after 6 weeks.

For most, the last 10% of full healing following a total knee replacement does not come until they are a year out from surgery.

I'm a little over 3 months out. Still doing PT 3 days a week. Still having days when my husband needs to pull me up out of a chair to walk using my walker. My pain is a 5-7 on a scale of 1 being no pain and a 10 being intense pain. I'm not released to do walking on my own, going outside by myself and distill need assistance with stairs. Also, part of my problem is my other is also bone on bone and very painful. It's really hard to deal with pain in both knees, but I can't have the second surgery yet. I have reached the point my surgery knee is hurting less than my other knee. The pain scale I noted earlier is my overall pain, both knees. I personally know people who have been up and around doing great a month after surgery, but believe me recovery is much worse than you expect.

I got a tkr so that I could continue skiing. I'm 13 weeks post op and it will be about 4 more weeks before the ski areas open up. Can you give me any advice? I was thinking that I should wear a knee brace to give a little support to the remaining lateral ligaments. Do you think that's a good idea?

I won’t be climbing any ladders at 6 weeks. Possibly could return to work if you had a desk job. Not physical labor.
