My dad was an electrician, he retired and moved to France where he renevated an old farmhouse in Normandy. He rewired the place himself, up to British standards, with British sockets and plugs which, as you can see, are very well designed. Then he had his home inspection, and the French inspector did not pass the electrics because they were not the typical French ones. So he removed all the sockets, put in French ones, got the home through the inspection and then put al the British sockets back in!

We've all stepped on an upturned plug in our bare feet at least once in our life - But it's a price worth paying for being safe.

I used to live and work in the UK for 10 months. Now I've returned to Poland.

But I fully confirm this. British plug is the most sturdy one and the safest one in entire world. Especially the rest of Europe, where the plug is really unsafe and easy to break.

Using plugs all around the world - and the USA, I genuinely find their electrical sockets and plugs rather terrifying. Love the reaction!

It was dads job to teach sons how to wire plugs safely. It became my `contribution`.
All my friends knew how to do it by the age of 10.
I was still wiring plugs for my mum 20 years later😊

The wire out of the plug also points downwards to minimise tripping

As a Brit, I must confess I have always taken our plugs for granted without realising there was so much planning that had gone into the design.

It is universal in most countries where the British have been

He didn't mention that with the three substantial prongs it is also anchored much more securely in the output socket compared to American plugs for instance, and output sockets usually have their own on/off switches as well.

Everyone in the UK aged 30 or over was taught basic electrics of how to wire a plug at school.
We also have things called electricity trip boards that wire our houses. These work by working out if there is a shorted out circuit and in milliseconds if there is something wrong they will triip out the entire circuit in a couple nof milliseconds to stop electrocution

I remember a scene in the Beatles movie HELP where the crazy scientist was commenting that they couldn't find good british plugs.

True story, when I was a kid, electric devices like toasters and so on *came without a plug wired onto them*. You had to do it yourself. I have no real idea why. So we haven't always been in favour of consumer protection in that sense. On the other hand everyone my age knows how to do it!

It's also almost impossible to pull the plug out by the wire, unlike American plugs that fall out if you look at them the wrong way.

As with everything, it comes down to, 'money'! Even if it's just a cent extra in cost, the industry will fight tooth and nail to keep it as 'optional' and not mandatory, that way they don't have to implement it and won't have to pay out to the families of people who have lost their lives due to the products they have been sold!

It was "unlucky" we had the opportunity to redesign our plugs and circuits in the 1950s and 1960s - primarily because of the large amount of house building and rebuilding necessary. Because of the lack of copper we had to do this - and lucky we had the people capable of this design
