Don't Be Like These Cuyahoga River Boaters

A look at the scrum that happens on the Cuyahoga River when the Norfolk Southern Bridge has a lift on a busy day. The Goodtime III Captain's view is different (further back and lower) than the security cam's view (which is mounted higher and looks down).

Boaters, don't be like these folks: keep it simple, pass to the right.

I had occasion to pilot a large party boat in Marina del Rey. I was a guest on board. I knew the captain, and because I had the proper license he allowed me to pilot the craft. I also taught sailing. That brief period at the helm gave me an appreciation of the blind spot in front of the party boat. After that, during sailing lessons, I doubled the distance in a crossing situation.

Just like when I pull in the driveway and my dog runs up to greet me. I can’t see him in front of the truck but he knows where I am. If he gets too close I suppose he’ll get run over.

The cruise ship was not going to be moving because the bridge wasn't raised high enough for it, and I'm sure the smaller boats knew that. Come on people be smarter than the small boater!!!!

It's just like on the roadways. No one wants to get behind the big trucks so they all try and beat the trucks with their more agile smaller vehicles. Doesn't make it right of course.
