Just a little help from someone who has done this for quite a while. If you use 2/3 brown. Meaning newspaper, cardboard, or leaves, twigs etc, and chop all of your ingredients into small pieces, you will have soil in a matter of six to eight weeks. So it’s 2/3 brown and 1/3 green (green is vegetable, fruit scraps, finely crushed egg shells, coffee grounds, used tea leaves etc). Stir it every few days and always keep it moist. You can also add a bit of soil and earth worms to speed the process up even more. It’s great that you are composting! Keep up the good work!

I love my city because here recycling is really well thought out. Besides plastic, metal, and glass, the trash truck will also collect biodegradable materials separately. They then either turn it into compost or burn it for energy. So all you have to do is just put it in a separate bin and they will pick it up at your house.

Hi, just a little bit of advice to improve your compost.
1. You have quite a lot of kitchen waste so no need to water your compost (especially because those black compost bins hold quite a bit of moisture)
2. Put more browns into the bin, such as branches and twigs, straw or wood chip, shredded paper and cardboard, dead leaves etc.
This will minimise the smell and also reduce the number of flies. A well balanced compost will attract a large range of wildlife.
Also, if you're not bothered about rodents you can also add cooked food such as rice, bread, pasta etc. As long as you have 50-70% of browns it's totally fine.

It's awesome that you can do this even in a small yard!

Can you compost without a garden? Because I'm moving into an apartment soon and I don't even have a balcony (just a french one if you know what those are).

Why avocado skin and cooked foods are non-compostable? And what do you do with fruit stones?

I think it may be bc of the heat in Texas and the size of our large back yard compost, ours is rotting and composting rapidly. Within our first couple months, we had compost!

I'm interested to know how many square feet your garden is. Would you mind sharing that? We have a small urban garden as well, and I am hesitant to install a composting bin, as the space is so limited, and it would cut into our planting space (as well as the bin space for paper & non compostable waste). On what kind of footprint do you manage this?
