I know dropping out of school isn’t anything to be proud of and for a long time I felt embarrassed to tell people, but I wanted to share my story with you to hopefully inspire you to chase your dreams, no matter what circumstances you come from.

I would have never known a person like you dropped out of school. You are so well spoken and full of knowledge.

I just feel inspired to share my own high school drop out story.

I dropped out of high school 3 months before graduation. I was facing a storm and it felt like I was losing. (I had very recently been the first one to find out my dad was gay and had been cheating on my mom for the entirety of their 20 year marriage, my sister was on a different continent serving a religious mission while I was trying to cope with my family falling apart, meanwhile I was in the process of losing my religion and consequently my entire identity, friends, and community because the mormon church was so entangled with my whole WORLD) And I couldn't do it. I still remember walking the halls of my school with my mom as we went from classroom to classroom letting my teachers know I was dropping out and getting all the needed signatures. Trying not to make eye contact with my peers as I cried, feeling like an absolute failure even though it was simultaneously the first time I could breath in months.
I eventually got my GED once I felt more emotionally stable. My choice hasn't held me back from any jobs. Thankfully people are much more open to seeing a GED on a job application these days. I'm working and saving up for school after working the past 2 years at a job that helped me realize my path in life.

Being a high school drop out felt like the worst thing I could be. Until I was one. And I had to forgive myself for having that prejudice. Everything is going to be okay. Everyone's got their own path in life. Be kind to yourself.

When I finished school I was literally forced to go straight to university without even having the time to think what I really wanted to do with my life. That’s how I ended up studying something that had nothing to do with what my real (now all figured) dream job was.
If I could give anyone an advice, that’d be: take your time to find yourself and don’t let people decide what you should do with your life.

Honestly, I can relate. I belong from a typical asian family where it’s like doctor, lawyer, engineer or MBA. I’ve always wanted to go towards music but there’s no opportunities here whatsoever. So proud of you to not fall into this stereotypical societal construct and you really have achieved so much 💝

One of my best engineering professors dropped out of high school. He hated it. He got his GED went into the Navy, got his degrees, and became an electrical engineering professor. Education rocks, school may not be for everyone. 🌷✨

i dropped out of high school when i was 16 and i didn’t even make it a month into junior year. back during my sophomore year i was severely depressed and being bullied and i just stopped going to school.. and i talked to the principal and he understood my struggles so he said i could come back for junior year. i thought enough time had passed and i wouldn’t get bullied anymore but i was sadly mistaken, and it was really hard on my mental health.

My father was exactly like your father, which is a typical behavior of most fathers in the asian culture (in my opinion). Luckily before my father passed, we were able to say I love you and hug each other making up the past when we didn't.
Tina, you should be proud of your success. It sounded like a long and hard journey but you made it. Not many people who dropped out of HS in the USA could not be that successful and fall in bad and low times especially finding quality or high paying jobs. Hopefully with perseverance, people can make it as successful as they can. Thanks for sharing your story. Have a nice weekend.

Tina! I can relate to this 100%! I am technically considered a high school drop out cause I didn't pass the required standardized math test that I needed to get my high school diploma. I did get to walk during graduation but I didn't get my diploma. I then went to community college and then transferred to a four year university and got a degree in journalism. I worked in newspapers for a few years but did not enjoy it. Three years ago I started working in youth development in my community and it was the best decision I made. I am currently back in school getting a certificate in non profit management cause this work is what really fulfills me! Thanks for being so honest and transparent with us! Sending you many hugs!!

It is so inspiring hearing this side of your story. So many people are just not meant for school in the typical sense and your story is proof that you don’t always need school to be “successful”. Following your passions and going against the grain to pursue what makes you happy is the most courageous thing in the world to me. Love you and your growth throughout the years❤️

Awe, as an asian with strict asian parents i guess i always fell into this "cookie cutter" where you HAVE TO be a doctor, engineer or lawyer. Im glad you decided to share because i always thought of you as a picture perfect icon because you have such a bubbly personality on cam. Its crazy to hear that some of the people i look up to the most didnt even need a university. Youre so successful even without finishing highschool. For me, personally I always wanted to do music or art for some sort of job but then again i would probably be lectured (LOL i still love my parents).Im a pretty expressive person when it comes to being creative (hence why music is important to me). You are so brave to be putting this out there for MILLIONS to see. SO glad theres someone like you here to share your experiences with us. <3

Your life story will inspire many teenagers who haven't yet figured out what they want to do with their life - hard work always pays off.
Congrats to you for what you've achieved. I've been your subscriber for the past 2-3 years and have seen you grow. Love you so much ❤

Amazing video Tina! I am so inspired by your story! I think so many people get stuck in that degree stigma and what they think they HAVE to do instead of what they could be doing. I’ve known many people who have found success without going to college or even graduating high school. It’s the hard work and determination of people that creates success! And your video is a shining example of that! As always, thank you for sharing! 💕

I'm going through a shitty phase right now and saw this video. What a word of encouragement! Thank you! It inspires me to finally want to live my life and get a job I love or something I can tolerate. The only thing stopping me right now is COVID since a lot of companies are not hiring right now. But thank you Tina by telling your story that there is light in the tunnel or whatever the saying is!

I dropped out of high school because I fell in love and wanted to get married. Plus being out of school gave me more hours to work. But dropping out dosent mean you cant follow your dreams. 3 years married. And married life isnt 2 perfect people being perfect all the time. Its more like 2 imperfect people who aren't willing to give up on each other.

Thank you for sharing something so personal, Tina. I'm currently in the boat of wanting to switch careers, but I lack the experience on paper needed so I can move further along. Thankfully I've been finding some pretty solid leads lately, and I hope that at least one of them leads me to where I want to be. Hope to cross paths with you in Singapore when I finally relocate there. Best of luck to your journey and may you never lose your drive :)

I'm really happy for you! It's a big change even getting out of uni, and going into the real world as early as you did seems the most brave decision ever and the most authentic for you ❤️
