That's called freeze cracked. You have to find them fresh out of the cliffs to avoid that.

Its nice how you take a beautiful natural sculptured rock and smash the shit out of until its just broken fragments in the " expectation " of finding that may not be there. In 50, 000 years when these fragments have rounded, some one may smash the shit out of them for the same reason
